I have been holding out on the iphone, mostly bc I will have to break my verizon contract to get it and that's $175 right there.
But most people I know say they SUCK as an actual phone. You can't really talk on it, etc.
Apparently there is something like a 30% drop rate in my area bc of the stress on the network. That's insane.

so....stick with the crappy non smart phone for now...

on top of that, it's pretty much amazing for anything I need to do. There probably isn't an hour in the day that goes by (except when I'm sleeping) where I don't make use of it. I almost don't even need a laptop anymore, the thing is that useful. After all my skepticism before I owned it, and all the flipping and flopping I went through over what smartphone to get, I couldn't be more satisfied.

I followed these instructions...

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/howtos ... d_g1_phone

...and installed the xROM OS on my G1 - it seems to be running much faster now, but the best feature is the wireless tethering!

I screwed my G1 up briefly but managed to get things sorted out.

If I had a mytouch I would probably just leave it alone - don't know how much of a performance improvement you would see.

no. i think it's less the hardware and more the performance of the carrier.

Yea, just read this on Gizmodo the other day. And 30% call drop rate is considered acceptable.

It's pretty hard to actually permanently damage these things, or at least the G1. I flash new images to mine with impunity, including an Android image I compiled from scratch, and have never had any issues that a fresh image couldn't solve.

I have not only put non-official software on my google phone, I have built non-official google software for the phone, and put it on the phone without breaking it.

yeah see, I think the iphone is amazing but when it's your only phone and you DO use it as a phone a lot, 30% is definitely a deterrent. I have friends with them and calling them is maddening. It otherwise is amazing but I have a hard time dealing with the shitty talkability.

it's not the iphone, btw
it's that the ATT network in NY can't handle the stress.

I don't know how many runners we have here, but if you're a runner and like the idea of what Nike+ offers but don't want to fork out all the $$$ it costs to get started, then get this app. It's called Runkeeper and it does everything the Nike+ product does, but.......for free!! I'm sure Nike hates this app, cause if you own an Iphone, the Nike+ gear is basically obsolete. All you do is start the app right as you're starting your run. When you finish your run you stop the app. You can then look at your Run Duration, Total Distance, Average Pace (in Km/h or Mil/h), Average Speed, the elevation you climbed, and the calories you burned (this is based on your weight and age). It also give you a map and shows where you ran. The tracking is so detailed that you can see where you have to of course to pass pedestrians/cross the road/whatever.

You can look at at all this data on your iphone, but it is also uploaded to the Runkeeper website, so you can look at your results at any time, and look back at results of past runs. Looks like this http://bit.ly/4wBg75

Definitely exciting if your a runner.

Oh, it will only work on Iphones with GPS, so no Ipod touches
