That's weird, because 70% of it has already passed the 5 year mark.

And that's why it's weird. Albums make a top 20 of the decade list 5-10 years after their release and then are disposable (whatever that means) in 5 more years? That'd be weird.

Which are the ones (three?) you think won't be disposable in 5 years? Are there more than are not disposable now but will be in 5 years?

Turn on the Bright Lights for me.

That album blew me away. Still amazing. Followed by Moon & Antartica, Funeral, Kid A, Ageatis Byrjun.

It's just an arbitrary number used to put out a list that's disappointing at best. In 5 years will I be listening to a Panda Bear record. Probably not. It's not that it's awful, but it's just another disposable record like most of the other stuff on that list. Plus if I want to hear The Beach Boys, wouldn't I want to hear the real thing and not a Panda Bear record. Have you seen the complete list ? As an example, there's no Drive By Truckers in sight, but they need to make room for Lil Wayne and Hercules & Love Affair. WTF?? Needless to say, I can see them redoing this list in time and having it be completely different and taking out shit that had no effect on the decade's music scene (missy elliott, daft punk, the rapture). I'm also sure I would put Radiohead just slightly behind ALS and cancer on my list of things that suck.

you are a fucking idiot.

first there is nothing wrong with black people making music. Pitchfork will not redo this list but will make very minor tweeks but only to include what happened this year. if you don't think Daft Punk made one of the more important records this decade than you didn't pay very much attention to music this decade. the Rapture caught lightening in a bottle for one year and guess what it was kind of fun. Radiohead are Radiohead and if it's not for you then fine but don't be so stupid with your comments. they might, however, be the most important rock band from this decade and possibly last decade as well.

Brilliant my friend, brilliant. Wway to go.
Nothing I said was racially motivated in any way. The artists i pointed out are simply not for me and not contributing what i would call worthwhile. It has nothing to do with race. You're wrong for even bringing that up. As for bands making...what did you call it, "important" music. You my friend, know very little, about anything.

I apologize if I insulted your precious Radiohead. Not for me.

Black people should stop that rap stuff as soon as possible as it's not offered anything of substance ever. They need to give regular rock a try.

While I don't like that Rapture album either, I don't think it's so obviously demonstrable that it has less impact on the decade's music scene than DBT, for better or worse.

And as for Panda Bear, yes, maybe you would like to hear the Beach Boys more. But sometimes people like something new too. It's not like Panda Bear is doing straight Beach Boys covers or something. I mean, why listen to Son Volt when you can listen to Uncle Tupelo? Why listen to Uncle Tupelo when you can listen to the Carter Family? Taken to the extreme, people would never listen to anything other than their favorite album by an artist (why listen to Smiley Smile when you can listen to Pet Sounds?) or even their favorite album period.

Your argument is "Why no DBT's?" Sucks, I agree and I am not a reg fan of DBT, but I'd say they should be on there. . Bring it up to P-fork. There are continuous differences with p-fork lists here.

I guess I need to give Discovery another shot. I mean, I just don't get that one at all, and I loved Homework back when I was in high school.

And I guess I can't resist trying to rank these (leaving off The Knife and Kanye because I haven't heard them and Daft Punk because I've only heard it once or twice):

1. Radiohead - Kid A
2. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion
3. Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica

-big gap-

4. Arcade Fire - Funeral
5. The Strokes - Is This It
6. Sigur Rós - Ã

Fifteen out of twenty are American.

Homework was definitely a big listen in high school. When Discovery came out, I had high hopes, but like you, I just didn't get into it like Homework. I love Daft Punk, but Discovery being some sort of a landmark album baffles me.

I think it's just because it's more popular. And it's influenced more popular music.

What are some of the contenders from outside the US that you think should be on there?

I'm asking out of genuine curiosity.

Many will disagree, I know, but:

i think Discovery is the better album...Homework is terrific but there a some throw away tunes and some of the songs go on much longer than they should. Discovery doesnt have a bad moment.
