Deal has some nice moments, before ending set 1 too soon. And I actually liked "Little Red Rooster" more than I normally would any basic blues. Queen Jane Approximately is a nice song. The 80's were the worst thing that happened to synthesizers were the worst thing that happened to The Dead.

Sorry if this is jumping the gun on your commentary.

I agree 'Deal' is great but I really liked 'Cassidy' in this show; I was actually going to play it over twice but thought it was violating the spirit of the "whole show/no skips" rule.

even though without a net - which contains bits from this same tour - was my big intro to the dead, i don't think i have the stomach for hornsby/this show.

Writing these stream-of-conscious so please excuse any run-on sentences, fractured thoughts, etc.

Hell In A Bucket
This has always seemed to me as a formulaic stab at writing a latter-day live anthem. "Please Stop, Enjoy The Ride" repeating over and over like a mantra. Keyboards way up-front on this.

Cold Rain and Snow
Got no problems with this. Mainstay of their live acts. Seems a little tired here, but still sounds good. Demonstrates Garcia's knowledge of old bluegrass/folk tunes. Beauty of the band. Know the roots, and developed a sound around that. This makes me think of Grateful Dawg.

I like the addition of IKO IKO in the 80s, but this second set may have caused me to walk out, were I in attendance. Absolute shite. This version of he's gone is like audial lomit. Like, laughably awful.

Little Red Rooster

Another older(er) blues tune that was added to the Dead's repertoire in the later periods...I think. I can't recall it on older live shows. The great thing to me with tunes like this is, Garcia and co. are exposing their audience to a whole genre of music that gets overlooked a whole bunch. Piano is great on this. 3 songs in and I have to say that Lesh's basslines are really smooth and polished on this show.

Stagger Lee

Another song that finds its way into a bunch of sets. The transition from LRR to Stagger Lee was horrible. Its the Dead so I expect it, but still doing LRR and Stagger Lee back-to-back feels ballsy to me. Dunno why. Maybe its because I'm used to rock shows now doing heavy hitters for like the first 5-6 and then throwing in slow-cookers later. Guitar seems weak in the solo. Keyboards=meh.

Queen Jane Approximately

If you don't like Hornsby's accompaniment you probably want to just stay away from this track. 2 Dylan covers in the show. Not really digging on that, despite my Bob love. Listening to the solos, I wish this was just an instro track.

A review on Amazon points out that Hornsby joined the band the night before (but still stands out, as evidenced by LRR). Mydland had a whole 9 days to turn his keyboards up to 11.

That was a horrible segue LRR/SL.

Tennessee Jed

Quote:
Tennessee Jed originated in Barcelona, Spain. Topped up on vino tinto, I composed it aloud to the sound of a jaw harp twanged between echoing building faces by someone strolling half a block ahead of me in the late summer twilight.

This is just a chug-a-lug show. Going through the motions. Dylan cover, blues cover, classic live track, etc. Formulaic.

What about the ultra-kookiness of "Iko Iko"? I mean in the instrumental. This is comedic shlock.

If you can refrain from mentioning Mydland altogether throughout this experiment, I would appreciate it, but please don't mention him and GOOD in the same sentence again.

Jesus, next thing you people will be talking about how hot Donna Jean is.

Back from lunch...

Cassidy

Its Cassidy, ya know? Its a staple of a live performance, and there's nothing that really stands out in the version as opposed to any other. Fits perfectly with the rest of the flat liner performance.

The performance just kinda stops, doesn't it?

Deal

I'm going to agree with many of yr sentiments and say that this is the highlight thus far. One of those great Garcia/Hunter writing-combo outcomes. The weird thing is, its like suddenly the band comes to life on this track.

Solo is really great here. Getting into it.
