The Suede thread got me thinking...why not up some Britpop and other assorted favorites from that era for anyone not familiar, and those that might have forgotten. So here goes.

[img][600:600]http://allmusic.galeon.com/caratulas/b/Blur_-_Leisure_-_front.jpg[/img]

In my opinion, the beginning of Britpop started with Blur, and this is their debut album. "Slow Down", "Bad Day", and "There's No Other Way" being the highlights for me. This is also the only Blur album that has a heavy baggy/Madchester influence.

that's a totally underrated record. Even among Blur aficionados.

and the video for "There's No Other Way" is priceless.

With the exception of perhaps those first two Oasis albums, this is probably my favourite Britpop album.

Gay Dad - Leisure Noise

Image

Quote:
Not since Toad the Wet Sprocket has a band had so much pop potential with such a horrid name. But, if you can get past Gay Dad's ridiculous moniker, an album of intelligent, guilt-free pop pleasure awaits you with Leisure Noise. The hooks of the first single, "To Earth With Love," are just the tip of the iceberg. Taking a familiar formula (the swaggar of 70s glam rock combined with space-age guitars) the group is remiscent of fellow brit rock bands like Ride and Swervedriver, but instead of burying the melodies and lyrics behind a thick wall of sound, Gay Dad's vocal hooks are unabashedly pushed to the fore. With a former Mojo contributer in their ranks, it's obvious the group knows their rock history. The brilliant "Oh Jim" is a textbook power ballad and "Dimstar" and "My Son Mystic, " both songs containing soaring, shimmering guitars, are a lesson for aspiring songwriter's wanting to explore dynamics and tension.

Maybe not an all-time fav but a very good, glossy Britpop entree: The Woodentops: Giant

Enjoying the GD release very much. Thx. Dimstar kicked off like a shot and Black Ghost is a stand out too.

Powder were one of the more sleazy sounding Britpop bands, mostly due to vocalist Pearl Lowe, who had this sexual delivery that I just loved. Criminally overlooked by the press who were more focused on Echobelly at the time. But many of the bands were huge fans of theirs (Blur, Suede, Elastica, etc.).

Dimstar is such a classic. Really love Oh Jim as well.

It's one album that Dumpjack and I continually rave about a few times a year it seems.

As far as debut albums go, this ranks up there with the best of them. Longpigs were from Sheffield, and were more imaginative and honest than many of the bands surfacing at the time. Longpigs featured Richard Hawley as well as Dee Boyle (Cabaret Voltaire).

New Wave of New Wave'ers These Animal Men were one of the best live bands in the genre. Heavy punk/glam influence, I played the fuck out of their "Two Sussed ep" as well as this album. Lots of drugs and debauchery.

My cache of "obscure" Brit Pop is pretty shallow, and even this pushes the edge of the genre a bit, but I've given this Brit release a lot of time... a lot.

The Warm Jets: Future Signs

Image

Quote:
Coming from one of the more unfortunately overlooked British bands, Warm Jets' debut album, Future Signs, is an impressive disc of post-alternative rock. Since the demise of Brit-pop, most British bands have become decreasingly commercial, and while Warm Jets are no exception, they manage to combine the best of Brit-pop with the best of post-rock. The songs aren't overproduced and the sound is a bit lazy (think of a young, British Pavement), but the pop appeal is definitely present, especially in the stellar singles "Hurricane," "Autopia" and the title track. There is only a minimal amount of filler, and the understated musicianship presented creates a truly unique sound for this debut LP. Future Signs is a very assured debut and the work of a band who is poised to create some very memorable music.

I'm in love with Marijne van der Vlugt. I always thought "Clear My Name" sounded like the Pixies. Either way, it's fucking great. And At the Drive In ripped off the beginning of "Come Back Tomorrow".

I have a vague recollection of Salad. I'm going to have to download that one to jog some memories.

Does Moose count as Britpop?
