The Candyskins Fun? (1993)

Image

When I first heard Oasis' Definitely Maybe I remember saying they sounded like the Candyskins. It's the same mix of Beatles-worship, big guitars, and keening vocals, although the big difference is the Candyskins weren't entirely witless. This was their debut, produced by the Vibrators Pat Collier, and with songs like "Wembley", "Land of Love", "Everybody Loves You", "Dig It Deep", "Let's Take Over The World", and "Everything Just Falls Apart On Me" it's easily their best.

The Primitives Lovely (1988)

[img][300:300]http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_w-u62XGbbZo/SqWUaWs-03I/AAAAAAAABfc/yK4jgMJCmt0/s400/The_Primitives_-_lovely.jpg[/img]

Best known for their song "Crash" appearing on some mainstream soundtrack album (I can't remember, but think it was Dumb and Dumber), this album holds up surprisingly well. The year was 1988, and the sound the Primitives were mining wasn't particularly new - they merely took the guitar squall of JAMC and tamed it into cute pop confections - but the songwriting lifted them above similar stuff (I'm looking at you, Daisy Chainsaw).

Everyone seemed to be focused on Echobelly and Elastica. I always thought Powder and Sleeper were the best female fronted Britpop bands.

"Swallow" or Vanity Thief as many called it is such a great fucking tune.

Last one tonight...

The Jazz Butcher Bloody Nonsense (1986)

[img][300:300]http://www.jazzbutcher.com/images/nonsensefront.jpg[/img]

The Jazz Butcher has to rank as one of the most criminally neglected bands to ever come out of the UK. Loaded with hooks, insanely witty, and, sometimes, just plain insane, Pat Fish, Max Eider and the boys absolutely owned some of the greatest moments from the '80s. Bloody Nonsense was the North American debut, but in reality it was a compilation cobbled together from the British debut, an ep, and various singles and odds 'n' ends. It includes the stunningly good "Southern Mark Smith". The rip is from a vinyl source - I don't think it was ever released on cd.

I'll vehemently disagree about Elastica which is one of the best of the 90s in this genre, but Sleeper is also pretty good. I actually still have the disc.

Elastica strongly heads up the best of the brit pop bands.
you can't touch that first album.

I meant it was on the list.
Parklife is the penultimate Britpop album.
to me, it defines it all.

I gotta say that between this and the Dick's Picks class I'm taking on another thread this has been the most music I've absorbed in a single week ever...excepting maybe the old days when I had a dozen different memberships with the BMG and Columbia House. Those days were sick...
