Hooooly fuck I love the Money Green paint scheme. The guy who used to play for the Continentals in Atlanta in the 90's had a vintage gretsch in that color scheme, and I never forgot it. That guy had a HUGE guitar collection, with most of them 80's and 70's rare japanese wierdo guitars. He's in this incredible swing band, and a phenominal guitarist, and you look up on stage and that great old swing sound is coming out of something like this:

So I made yet another spur of the moment guitar purchase, picking up a new condition Galveston Rickenbacker 330-12 copy. I'm not usually a big fan of copy guitars, but I've wanted a rick for years but have never been able to afford it.

But after spending some time with it, it's been a good guitar so far. There are a few differences between it and the original...tailpiece, slightly different headstock, wider neck, no tone blender knob, pickups (but they're not too bad)...but otherwise it does the job. I'd say it does about 80-90% of everything a normal rick can do, for only about 16% of the price.

Still want a rick someday, but for now this will do.

Like I said, its hard to turn down a good deal when I see one (especially when its something on my wish list). But the guy I bought it from had a little studio in the basement of a small guitar shop, and he must've had $75,000+ worth of guitar and recording gear down there...and that wasn't even all his stuff! It was ridiculous...I must've spent half the time just staring in awe everything he had.

So I need some advice yet again. Any pedal steel players here, my parents are considering paying for half of one as a Christmas present, but I don't know much about brands. Anybody have any knowledge about what's good and what isn't?

figure out a price range first. If you've got a good amp with some clean and reverb, then you'll need a steel and a volume pedal.

Kyle has a Sho-Bud Maverick, 3 pedals one knee lever. They can typically go from 5-800.

I've got an MSA with 3 and 4. It was selling for a grand but i've seen them go for as much as 1600, because it's one with an all wood body.

Carter Starters i've seen go used typically from 450-650, and it's the same setup i've got, 3 and 4. You can get one new maybe 700-900.

Having the extra knee levers is extremely nice.

It's a super addicting instrument. I've got my eye on a double 12 string with 10 and 6 on ebay, it's going for cheap at the moment, but i expect it to jump in the last day. Ebay and craigslist are a good way to look if you know what you want. Reading the for sale ads at the steel guitar forum is another good way to get educated.

If you luck into something with more pedals and/or knee levers, that's never a bad thing, cause it'll keep your resale value up, and it's expensive and sometimes close to impossible to expand on your instrument, especially if it's an older vintage steel, or a new one that isn't meant to be re-rodded or expanded on like the carter starter. GFI makes a good student steel as well and it comes with 3 and 2, but can expand to 3 and 4.

Simmons, Genesis, and Stage One by Zum are all good student steels as well, that are pro-quality. I'm warning you now though, you go this route and eventually you're gonna be saving up a good 2-4 K to get another one.

What Phil said.

I wouldn't get something as limited as what I have if I could do it over again. There are a lot of basic, useful chords I physically cannot reproduce. I hear other guys do it on records and I KNOW what they're doing, but I don't have the knee levers to do it. That old '71 Sho Bud is very reliable, stays in tune really well, and has a nice mellow sound. For that I love it. But it's limited.

DO IT.

QUESTION:

Will I ruin my mesa boogie dc-5 by playing a bass through it? It's a 1x12 50w guitar amp.

Just at quiet bedroom practice levels, not at a full band practice...

I need to practice bass at home, 'cause I'm playing bass in a band now, but don't actually have a bass amp (never played bass before). I'll get one eventually, but in the meantime I use someone else's at practice/shows, and can't get any better without practicing at home.

Advice is appreciated. Thanks.

At bedroom levels, you shouldn't have any problems at all. How's the bass coming?

Yeah at full volume you could blow the speaker, but not in the bedroom.

What Bloor and the Cap'n said.

Just don't get carried away.

Just played my first recording session on pedal steel this weekend. Got another one with a different band tonight.

Looking at getting another steel... Ky, you should ebay or craigslist your maverick (they've gone up in going price for nice ones like yours) and put it towards buying mine so i can move up in the world.

Thinking about going with the universal tuning... There's a 14 (FOURTEEN?!) string sierra stafford elegante on ebay with 8 and 7.

I'm slightly intimidated and completely intrigued by the possibilities. Intimidated by the possibility of instantly sounding like crap. Intrigued by the possibility of all those chords...

I can't argue with the logic, phil, but at this point in my life I have no time or space to even pull out a pedal steel, much less really use it. Gotta have a few things happen first...

- let that kiddo get bigger
- move to some place someday with THE ROOM, which will contain music gear and such all set up all the time should I feel like playing.

Not great odds of #2 happening, but I'd need some more room than I have now, that's for damn sure. My place is tiny.

Can you attach a Parsons-White B-Bender to a lap steel; or a Hip-Shot?

If I was gonna go that route Todd, I'd just get a b-bender tele. Always been curious. But yeah, I have no remotely plausible excuse these days to spend anything on music gear. I have such fucking much of it (9 electric guitars, 1 acoustic guitar, 1 bass, a fender vibrolux reverb, a '66 fender tremolux head and 2x12 cab, and a mesa dual recto 2x12 combo), and I don't play out anywhere, ever. Seasons change. One day I'll be playing out again but until then I'm just living vicariously through friends (here and elsewhere).

Shit phil, that thing looks amazing. It's in great shape, it's well-made, and the price is (relatively) cheap at $2k. I wish it were another color - which is to say "any" color.

It's supposedly "silver cloud" which is oregonian for "off white".

Still, maybe if that tax refund happens before the auction ends, she may be mine.

I don't recall thinking I was gonna be able to loll around all day and play guitar post-birth. But I'm pretty dumb, so it's possible.

I meant when I told you that you were going to think your place was too small once you had a kid.
