Swine Flu surronds me. Two of my wife's cousins, my wife's aunt, and my wife's dad all got it. And I saw them all at a wedding the day before they found out that they had it.

We had our first fatality this week in my county. Its not so much the swine flu you've got to be worried about, but the things that come afterwards...namely pneumonia.

It has been prevalent here since the school year started. We didn't really have a confirmed case at the University until the annual Thespian camp this summer. Since then there have been school closures and sporting events canceled.
I thought I was coming down with the illness last Friday, but whatever I had didn't take and I'm feeling better.

this might be the case with seasonal flu strains but the people ive seen die of this have succumbed to the overall effects of the virus, namely its effects on the lungs. many people will not have secondary infection.

I've heard from so many people that the vaccine is worse than getting the flu and from others that it is safer to be vaccinated than not have it, so which is it? People are so scared now, and I think it's a little bit ridiculous.

Our kids are getting the vaccinations on the recommendation of our pediatrician.

My school district has about a 25% absentee rate this week due to illness.

This is competely untrue. The fears over this vaccine are unfounded and based on myth or anecdote. Overall, this is a very safe vaccine that is no different than, and produced the same way as, the yearly seasonal flu vaccine that has been around for decades.

Definitely get your kids vaccinated as soon as the vaccine is available in your community.

But it has higher levels of mercury in it or something than would normally be allowed, right?

People taking their autism "research" cues from Jenny Mc Carthy need to have their parental rights revoked.

Only the multi-dose vials contain any amount of thimerisol and it is a minute amount at that, if any. Most clinicians have gone out of their way to purchase thimerisol-free vaccines due to this concern.

The single dose vials have no preservative.

I'd add that the minute amout of thimerisol in the multidose vaccine is completely safe. I have had no worries having my own kids get a thimerisol containing vaccine. Honestly, those who think otherwise are either wildly misinformed or complete fucking idiots.

I guess there has been another huge outbreak of it here according to the local press and we are now up to three deaths and have had 880 people hospitalized statewide for H1N1.

I also took this factoid from the same local press article:
Nationally, there have been 12,384 hospitalizations for flu-like symptoms between Aug. 30 and Oct. 3, and 1,544 deaths.

The current infection rate, at least here in Nebraska, is equal to the January peak of a normal flu season.
