Drums went by hardly noticing it and I agree that The Wheel was very tight. Into Space now. This is one of those where I try to picture how thew crowd is holding up. Maybe thinking about grabbing that T shirt before the lines get too long?

A free, but somewhat reserved version of both.

Stella Blue>Playing In The Band

It sounds like they are getting all the jam out of their system before they (hopefully) rock out the show on the final 2 tracks.

Sugar Magnolia, Johnnie B. Goode

Sugar Mag was pretty good. No complaints. JBG was ok, but seemed lacking somewhere. Drums were wicked though. For as much of a show piece this is for guitarists, I really expected something a little more electrifying to happen, but eh, its the end of the show, everyone's tired.

...and we're done. I didn't find this too strenuous, and to be honest, had I had the time to do this all-day yesterday and had my pc not screwed up attempt #1 at dling, I would've done it all in one sitting. There were some seriously good renditions of songs, and then some blah ones. This probably ranks #3 or #4.

I'm right behind you FR. It was a good show, but some of it seemed a tad perfunctory. I also liked your comment about JBG and think the entire show was very much a guitar show...more so than some of the earlier ones.

I guess I'm up for Monday. I'll dwell deeply on this right now and post up Sunday.

This was a really good, very enjoyable, tight set, IMO. The setlist might have been a little Dead by Numbers, but the band kept it movin.

Hey...hope this isn't a thread fart, but I thought if anyone was up for a little extracurricular activity over the weekend they could DL and listen to the Barton Hall '77 show I grabbed from the Internet Archives.

Image
    Setlist:
    Minglewood Blues
    Loser
    El Paso
    They Love Each Other
    Jack Straw
    Deal
    Lazy Lightning-> Supplication
    Brown Eyed Women
    Mama Tried
    Row Jimmy
    Dancin' In The Streets
    Scarlet Begonias->
    Fire On The Mountain
    Estimated Prophet
Saint Stephen->Not Fade Away-> Saint Stephen-> Morning Dew
    E: One More Saturday Night
Perhaps this is old news and tunes to some about it's Place in the Pecking Order, but it's a fresh listen for me and sounds pretty dang good.

Another thing I like about this is it being an audience recording, and an excellent one at that, and it adds just the right amount of crowd and auditorium to the mix (especially the vocals)...something I find lacking in the Dick's Picks soundboard releases.

Enjoy!

nice jasn, i'll definitely be grabbing that. that tape was my cherry popper back in the day, and probably still my favorite.

i just received this in the mail this week, and am planning to up it if there are interested parties. i'm gonna try to bust it out this weekend, but at 10 discs, it may have to wait a week or so when we get back from pdx.

I'm VERY interesting in that set, sir. Whenever you've got the time.

A Smart Playlist sez I've logged 23 hours of Dead tunes since this sick little idea kicked in on 10/6. It's not over yet either, methinks.

It's going to be interesting to see how it affects my listening habits when I come out of this orbit. Uh...this orbit is escapable...isn't it?

Funny how many "garage" bands I've interviewed in the last day that mentioned the Grateful Dead (without prompting). Even Andre from Deadly Snakes has a side project with his father called Grateful Dad, which funnily enough is a name I'd been kicking around for a band recently, unbeknownst. Unbeknownst?

Starting off small for tomorrow. The only single disc in the whole series.

Dick's Picks Volume 2

Image

Quote:
Adhering to his unofficial mandate to release rarely traded nuggets from the Grateful Dead's voluminous tape vaults, Dick Latvala chose to unleash the core of the combo's second (of two) set from Halloween, October 31, 1971 at the Ohio Theater in Columbus, OH on Dick's Picks, Vol. 2 (1995). The lineup consists of Jerry Garcia (lead guitar/vocals), Bill Kreutzmann (percussion), Phil Lesh ( bass/vocals), Bob Weir (guitar/vocals), and new recruit Keith Godchaux (keyboards) -- who is replacing the ailing Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (organ/harmonica/vocals). In fact, the show excerpted here is from Godchaux's tenth performance with the band. All but the most astute Deadhead would be hard-pressed to tell, as his style of improvisation is faultlessly suited to the Grateful Dead's sonic scrutiny. This disc serves up nearly an hour's worth of their innate compatibility, commencing with a lengthy and intricately indulgent exploration of the psychedelic portal "Dark Star." As Godchaux's presence in the audio mix is deficient at times, it is difficult to thoroughly assess his contributions. Just as the interplay begins getting really interesting, the trippy ambiance is sonically sideswiped as Weir segues the combo's into an unexpected but nonetheless spirited "Sugar Magnolia." Less inspired is the perfunctory "St. Stephen," whose saving grace is that it provides a launch pad for the tasty "Not Fade Away" sandwich to follow. Instrumentally, Garcia's crystalline tone and fluid fretwork -- particularly during the meaty "Going Down the Road Feeling Bad" -- is rhythmically countered by Kreutzmann's jazzy timekeeping. While certainly an all-around solid selection, Dick's Picks, Vol. 2 doesn't present a profound portrait of this transitional phase in the Grateful Dead's three-decade long journey. Parties wishing to hearing more circa the Fall of 1971 tour are encouraged to discover the Grateful Dead Download Series, Vol. 3: 10/26/1971.
