i like this a lot, but every time i pull it out i just get bored and then want to listen to lyn collins or something. anyone else have this problem with the "revival" acts, where you kind of like them but they really just remind you how much you like their influences? strangely i don't have this problem with the Detroit Cobras, that girl's voice just rips.

let's go ahead and add o-dub's comments:

I'm such a fan of this new album by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. I sing more thorough praises on the Podcast but the gist of it is this: this band makes incredible soul and funk music and this is, by far, not only the best thing I've heard from Daptone Records, but probably one of the best "retro-soul" albums I've heard from any group or artist. Her high-powered funk blasts are great but the ballads and mid-tempo groovers are even better.

bob, i think that you would like this if you've not got it already.

I've heard very good things about it but haven't bought it or heard it, which is basically for the same reason you gave for getting bored with it. No matter how good it is, I'm pretty sure that there is better '60's and 70's soul that I don't yet own and should be a priority to get before this.

They are playing in LA next month though and I'm looking forward to seeing them.

i think i get to the point where I forget i'm listening to something carrying the "revival" tag, even though their sound might not be that similar to the original acts they’re getting compared to. My problem is that this genre in particular has been exhausted for a while by some of the most naturally talented musicians on the planet. Of course it’s fantastic for a new album that isn’t a virtual clone of the old stuff to drop nowadays, but at the same time the tracks I’ve heard haven’t done anything to make me run out and pick up the album. Granted, there’s only been two, but yeah i’m more or less content with the stuff i got now.

That being said, a few weeks ago i was getting ready to have dinner with my family and as my grandmother was pulling into the driveway, one of their songs was playing on my ipod speakers and my sister says “Cotton, we might want to get the R-A-P music off, too. That shit just about cracked me up.

i actually went and saw this band over the weekend, and you're RIGHT! although there were far too many opening bands, and her band did their own set before Sharon hit the stage, so as great as she was i was pretty ready for the show to end when it did.

yeah, i saw them a few months ago in lawrence, they were excellent. but i have the same problem with a lot of that stuff--i have a hard time listening to the poets of rhythm, whitefield brothers, quantic, etc. for any extended period of time. i will say that the sharon jones record is the first one i've heard that gets close to the original material, especially on the slower ballad stuff. lady can sing.

So I'm super late to the game, but I like what I'm hearing.

It's on my to buy list, but I want now. Would anyone have this or 100 Days, 100 Nights, perchance?

I swear I am a reliable person most of the time. Just... not for you. You must have upset me in the past. It's the only explanation.

I actually know where these are. I just have to pick up '100 Days, 100 Nights'my parent's house when I stop by tonight.
