I bought that book earlier in the year but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. Never seen the movie either.

the book is great, I read it a full ten years before I saw the movie. I can't remember which I liked more, but there are some superficial differences.

It wasn't just about Lebron was it? I mean, I'm sure he had to be the focus of a lot of it, but did they look at the other guys just as much?

They spent a good amount of time with 2 or 3 of the other guys, yeah. It was probably 40% LeBron and 60% everybody else. It didn't feel uneccessarily lopsided.

Saw Paranormal Activity last night and I loved it. This one is pretty subjective though and if it doesn't suspend your disbelief, you will hate it, obviously. The experience of seeing it in a theater packed with college kids was pretty amazing too. Not since Saving Private Ryan have I been to a movie where so many people had such a visceral reaction. Several young women were screaming at the top of their lungs. When we left the theater, it felt more like leaving an awesome concert where everyone had tuned in on the same vibe.

Loved it too...

Best part though, was half way through....a 'black' guy got up from his seat (he was by himself), and proceeded to walk out of the theater. Before he exited everyone's view, he exclaimed "Oh Hell no!". The theater roared.

I liked it. Focused more on the culture of mushroom experts and obsessives than psychedelic use of, although there was 15 minutes in the film dedicated to psylocibin.

Saw this last night. Enjoyed it. The mood/tone was ominous and melancholy. I definitely now want to dig into articles and interviews about the making of the movie.

Today was movie day for me. Caught two movies in the theater, and one on DVD.

First, the noon showing of Where The Wild Things Are, which totally captivated me. While i've heard people complain about a lack of plot, to me the relational tensions are more than enough to drive the movie. To me they nailed the emotions and fears of all the characters--not necessarily as they are in the book--but to the point where they felt real to me.

Then this evening I went to the 7:15 showing of Paranormal Activity, which HAS to be seen in a full theater. By itself it would have been amusing--I found it very well put together. However, what made the movie truly a fun event was watching it in a full movie theater. In fact, I would say that this HAS to be seen in a theater to get the right effect. Lots of people screaming at the right times. So while the movies, to me, was more freaky and a bit unsettling than actually SCARY, I got a good kick out of the audience reaction.

Finally, I ended the night with Blade Runner. Which was good, though didn't particularly live up to the hype.

It was pretty awful, yet thoroughly entertaining.

And I rewatched this for about the fifth time.

Watched this last night. Creepy shit. My girlfriend got to a point where she would plug her ears whenever they would go to bed. Not your typical horror movie filled with blood and guts and gore. The film relied more on creeks and slight sounds to set the mood to scare the shit out of you. I ended up having nightmares all night last night, something that hasn't happened to me as a result of a scary movie since i was a kid.

Woke up this morning and deleted the movie off my hard drive (a dvd quality copy leaked already, somehow). Although i did quickly watch the alternate ending, I never want to see another second of this movie. I mean it's good, but fuck, i can't get it out of my head.

Fuck you movie, fuck you.

I agree with many of the insights into Paranormal Activity, but I really wasn't spooked too much. I guess in a way, I think about demons and evil a little bit more than the average person since its pretty out in the open at my church...and no, we're not a fire and brimstone type of place--quite the opposite. It is talked about, so I'm a definite believer that stuff sorta like that exists.

That said, the girl who was sitting between my friend and I was absolutely terrified and was shaking non-stop from the first "scare". I guess I had a mellow crowd as well, because no one screamed out loud except on the last "thing" (don't want to spoil anything).

Personally, I don't think I'll ever watch again simply because with all those effects, I really think part of the experience is seeing it a)in a theater with b)an audience--even if you have an indifferent crowd like mine, the sense of people being on the edge of their seat is still felt.

I just watched:

Image

Pretty great doc about the tattooing pioneer. From a historical POV, the anecdotes about Honolulu pre and post WWII are great. Legal prostitution, lining up sailors for 2 drinks a piece, etc. All really great. Some great readings of his letters as well. Guy was a dude with a capital D.

also:

Image

"Left Bank" which started pretty good, got slow, and ended with a bang. Not the Left Bank in Paris, but rather an idyllic place in Antwerp. Shot incredibly well for a psuedo-horror/suspense film, it completely makes me want to go there.

Quote:
When Marie, an introverted young athlete, collapses and is forced to take a rest from competitive sport, she decides to move in with her new boyfriend in his flat in Left Bank.

Their passionate relationship at first seems to help her, that is until she discovers that the previous tenant of the flat mysteriously disappeared.

Marie begins to doubt whether she can really trust her boyfriend. Life in Left Bank, once envisaged as a dream town, starts to become an alienating nightmare. Slowly, she loses grip on reality.

The above doesn't do it justice, but it gives you a sense of what its about.

haha, I watched Trick 'r Treat last week. I got a kick out of it--not scary, but kind of evokes a more sinister Twilight Zone. Pretty funny, too.

Saw Whip It this afternoon. Solid film, a goodly number of laughs -- aided in no small meaure by Ellen Page's presence -- but nothing spectacular. See it from Netflix.

Don't even bother with Netflix on this one--it's terrible.

This was the first flick I've walked out on in over a decade, and I see at least 40-50 movies a year in theater, including many pedestrian RC's that I can at least muster 90 minutes of patience for--couldn't do it with this one.

This was a mess. Countless cringeworthy dialogue moments, no chemistry between anyone and Drew Barrymore was just flat-out awful in her acting (really?) and directing (time to go back to drawing board).

This is getting overwhelmingly positive reviews, with an 82% on Rottentomatoes, so I guess I'm with the 18% here. Granted, I didn't see the last 30 minutes, so if somehow it suddenly morphed into a well written and acted film with even an ounce of charm in the latter third, maybe it's worth a rental.
