I've been through Memphis a dozen or so times, at least, but I've never actually done any of the tourist hot-spots. Well, I've been to all the gift shops and crap across from Graceland (and drank the Hot Rod diner out of beer while watching Joe Kent do his "Elvis" show three times in a row), but I've never been across the street and inside the house.

So let's say Graceland is #1 on the list, but I might have a chance to do one Graceland plus one of the following:
• Stax Museum
• Sun Studio
• National Civil Rights Museum

Anybody just spew at the thought of visiting one of these again, or at least have suggestions, insight or thoughts? I saw a show at the New Daisy Theater in '98 or some shit, so I've been to Beale Street. Also, the joint that sells fried chicken and 40 oz. bears is on my bucket list, but it will probably have to wait.

On Front Street. Pretty damn good chicken, in my book. Beer served: ponies to 40s.

Just coming in here to say that I live a little over 3hrs away from Memphis but never have the urge to go there. I spent one night there about 9 years ago and don't remember much about it. One of my best college friends is a native.

Sun Studios is impressive in a quiet, small way. I haven't been since like 1988 but even then I remember being impressed by what those walls had seen.

When I was there, we did the entire Graceland thing. I was even able to sneak a few pics. if I had a reliable scanner, I'd show y'all the gun case -- it alone is worth the price of admission.

Stax and the civil rights jonx weren't open, but Sun is indeed interesting, if TINY. But you'll hear the screams of 1000 victims just walking in the door.

I had fun on Beale St. - ended up seeing the Saw Doctors at BB King's, falling in lust with an Ole Miss Co-ed, and then hitting some strip club that served 40s. It was sweet.

If I went back of course, I would book a room at the Peabody, and sip mint juleps in the lobby wile watching the ducks :)

Rendezvous Ribs. Memphis institution and birthplace of the "dry rub". Bill Clinton had this cater his '92 inauguration. It down near Beale St.. I think it's close to the Peabody.

Honestly, outside of the downtown area and Beale St., I don't know much about Memphis. I'd actually like to go back sometime and do Beale St one night. Maybe hit Memphis in May and stay at the Peabody.

I went to Graceland and Sun Studios. Both must sees for any music fan but neither really met my expectations to be perfectly honest. Still, you gotta do it. Too much history there.

Graceland was really tacky and hilarious actually but the stories about him recording some of his 70's material right there in the "jungle room" or the piano he played only hours before he died were interesting. The most overwhelming moment for me was the gold records and memorabilia hall. You see that and are really reminded of what a world changing artist he really was. It's pretty amazing.

Sun, as stated earlier, is really small but it's still pretty cool to stand there in that room. It didn't take long to see everything. Picked up a t-shirt.

When are you going? If you don't have a specific time, Memphis in May is supposed to be pretty cool. Usually the first weekend of May is the Beale St. Music festival. Big name to local blues acts all weekend. Another weekend in May is the Memphis BBQ Festival which, along with the Kansas City BBQ fest is probably one of the countries biggest BBQ competitions.

I was in Memphis this summer and I had a great time there. Besides the previously stated, may I suggest staying at the Westin downtown. It's one of the nicer hotels, anywhere.

Also, go, and at least, have a drink at the Peabody Hotel or stay for the touristy duck parade.

Food-wise, Rendez-vous is great for its ribs, but also go and try Interstate Ribs and have their brisket sandwich.

Sun Studio is worth going for the tour. I was told the R&B Museum is great. Finally, if you're a guitarist the Gibson guitar factory is downtown.

I'm just driving through next week. I'm not spending the night, cause I'll only be 3 hours from my parents. Thanks for the input. I think right now I'm leaning toward Graceland + Lorraine.
