You're trying way too hard, Gar. Pull it back a bit and it might be a little more believable.

Sorry for enjoying music guys.

Oh come now. You did this for attention, making sure as usual that everyone knew it was YOUR idea, and when that didn't get enough outside posts, you started this just to make good-n-sure. It's no big deal either way, I think it's actually a neat idea for you people with strong enough stomachs, and I totally enjoy popping in there every few days to catch a whiff of Hippy and see how my boys are making out (it's like watching some friends try and hold their hands on the car at the mall the longest for some radio contest), but don't play the "sorry for enjoying music" card. Not with a straight face.

I started this thread just because every 5th post is Dalen or Rads bagging on this.

you're on some straight up bullshit tip my nugga.

jsh - genuinely enjoys that shit. kinda frightening really, because i rate his taste highly.

GAR - acts like he likes it more than he really does.

bloor - that music is made for him.

Dumpjack - tagalong

i'd say Loog will try and win this.

There is actually NO question that each of us are going to cross the "finish" line together, nor of our intentions with this.

The interesting thing about the project is that instead of making us hate the Dead from overexposure its actually making us like them more.

Some variation of Stockholm Syndrome I expect.

I'm pretty sure dumpjack and jsh are the only two involved who actually LIKE what they hear. jsh because he's too stoned to know better, and dumpjack because he lacks a taste filter.

Well that was the point, let's listen to ALL of Dick's Picks. Why bother starting anything if you're not gonna finish it?

i don't know. for me this just coincides with already spending a lot more time listening to the dead in the past year than i ever have. never have been a deadhead, and still don't consider myself one, but i'm getting a lot out of listening this regularly. i get high a lot, but am not stoned in the mornings.

and i challenge any one of you to show me anything happening currently – musically, on the board, mutually exclusively – worth and capable of commanding this kind of attention, albeit from a very few.

Totally - this is the really interesting aspect to me from the outside. Completely not what I expected. I'd like to hear more about that part - like does it start blending together after awhile, or are the variations getting more noticeable?

Subtle variations become more noticeable. Different eras overlap and differentiate. Non-immediate factors, like context, start to have some clout.

Just found this, and agree 100%:

in 1978, Dave Marsh Wrote:
The Grateful Dead epitomize hippie rock & roll, and [unless you're a hippie yourself] this is one assertedly major oeuvre that's virtually worthless except for documentary purposes. The Dead's long modal jams may be the stuff of mesmerism in concert (although even there, it's questionable), but they're simply self-indulgent and boring on disc. The band's attempts at pop, rock and country are rendered effortlessly irritating and stodgy by the band's lack of a crisp rhythm section and/or a single competent vocalist.

The Dead are worshipped for their image as hip patriarchs, which means that as long as Jerry Garcia has that acid twinkle in his eye, he'll never have to worry about his pedestrian set of chops. Truthfully, there simply isn't very much about this group that's impressive, except the devotion of its fans to the mythology created in Haight-Ashbury and now sustained in junior high schools across America. At its peak, the Dead has essayed competence: Workingman's Dead is third-rate next to Sweetheart of the Rodeo, much less anything Gram Parsons ever recorded on his own, but it has a sweet ingenuousness that renders it bearable. Similary, Live Dead isn't much less interminable than any other Dead concert piece, but it has a freshness that feints toward vitality. But when the Dead attempt to rework rock and blues standards - as they did on their horrible debut album, and have sporadically since - they are a pox on the face of pop. And the group's patchouli-oil philosophy, which does nothing more than reinforce solipsism and self-indulgence in its listeners, except when it's nurturing its Hells Angels fan club, is exactly the sort of stuff that gave peace 'n' love a bad name.

Since joining Arista, the Dead have basically relinquished any claim to being taken seriously except as nostalgia mongerers. They essentially fulfill the same purpose as do the current Beach Boys: offering facile reminiscence to an audience with no memory of its own. This would be a tragic end, if there had been any genuine glory involved to begin with.

Not regarding the above commentary, but Dave Marsh is fucking garbage. Chuck Eddy is like Shakespeare compared to him.
