This guy is a pretty good basketball writer (SLAM magazine) who also appears regularly on a sports talk show that I frequent. Anyway, he has a new gig with Page 2 on ESPN. com and wrote this intro piece that while I don't necessarily agree with 100% of, i like the opinions. etc, etc.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=jackson/intro/050308a&num=0

And, knowing of yours and Loogar's political 'suasion, I figured, it should be.

Nice dude. Thanks for posting this. Lookin' forward to reading this every week. I too don't agree with a lot of his opinions. But it might spark some good conversation around these parts.

Me too, Monty.

Key line from this column:
Lucked up. Spit a few verbs, convinced 'em that Stephen A. wasn't the only one.

So instead of wasting space on Page 2 ducking my own sic, I figured if I told you some of the things I believe in, that would give you a better idea of what I intend to flip on

he's so hit or miss with me I can't really consider him a solid writer anymore. I haven't seen his ESPN work but his stuff in SLAM can be downright awful, especially considering how talented most of the other writers are there. I don't care how many times he tells me he's friends with Stephon Marbury, it doesn't matter.
The final straw for me was when he wrote that Ricky Davis column like 2 years ago entirely in faux-rap prose. It was the most boring thing I've ever read in my life, about a guy who actually makes for a pretty damn interesting article.

I still haven't read his column on watching the women's NCAA tournament.

I think i need to be a bit bored to venture there. His opening piece for ESPn (i guess that's the link posted) was somewhat interesting and somewhat grating.

I'll have to dig up the Bill Simmons response to a question about Scoop Jackson's take on Sports Movies.

Q: Scoop Jackson says that "Cornbread, Earl and Me" and "The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars" are the greatest sports movies of all time. Where do you rank them?
– Brian Artis, Newport News, Va.

SG: That's like asking me, "Scoop Jackson thinks the world is flat, where do you stand?"

I always think about our friend, the ex-candidate for president whenever the blacker Scoop is on the radio.

But why should I check myself; especially in comparison to Bill Simmons? Simmons is entertaining at most 60% of the time. Half the time, I'd rather read Fat Jason Whitlock (who has become the Fat Terrance X), or one of those 100's of columns I scan (because I am a sick bastard) on http://sportspages.com/

Yeah, guys like Jackson are trying to inflect a bit of the "hip-hop style" into sports writing (something that certain people on this site are guilty of as well); its not a perfected art by any means, but it is certainly something different and doesn't seem nearly as disengenuous as say, Stu Scott.

I dispute the 60% and raise it to 80%.

i'm giving a pass on the one that was all discrete points, but this one's thrust seems to be that the situation is complex and that he has no take on it, which i would then say means that he needn't write anything about it if he had nothing to say one way or the other.

Have you read his one on the women's tourney? Talk about not really making a point other than some of the games are close and girls are generally more attractive than men.

sorry i started this thread for the express intent that you could kill this guy. Sorry dude, I've heard him on The 2 Live Stews a couple times and thought he was pretty ok. His writing is ok too---admitedly notthing to nominate for a pulitzer.

Honestly, I would have never have brought it up if only to have you tell me about the brilliance (sic) of Bill Simmons...... :D

Not to take a shot, but you might wanna consider getting more of your sports info from people who aren't caucasian brothers. Not necessarily from Scoop, but flip around a little bit brother. Variety is the spice etc.

When did this become a racial issue? Maybe he's just a bad writer?

Sorry Shiv, I know Boston is notoriously the most rascist city in America, but I'm sure you get to at least see (and probably talk to) a brother sometimes. DHR lives in Idaho---I wasn't making a racial comment about him liking or disliking Jackson; it was more of a friendly suggestion (independant of this Scoop Jackson thing).

Apparently you get all your info about cities from Barry Bonds.

 Nice retort; Actually I should have said "Major" city. Stats back me up. This may not be a topic you want to trifle with me on; (if only b/c its gonna make me have to go to my storage unit and dig out a myriad of stats and quotes---i did WAY too much boring research on the subject of race relations in college and that was damn long time ago). Exausting shit. Hows about we agree to disagree for now? I need a shower before dinner

Pretty fun to mess around with the third rail of BB discussions though, eh?

By the way, Dr. King though that Chicago was the most rascist city that he had ever visited.

I'm guessing he'd now change that vote to Memphis.

Memphis, but at least they can elect a black mayor and Congressman..we'll see about Mobile in August.

(I didn't make the connection at first, though, my bad)
