From Pitchfork:

Quote:
Just when you thought Spoon topped-out when it came to making staggeringly consistent indie rock albums, they kept on doing you one better. Considering these guys made three of our favorite albums of the decade, we're hoping they can come up with as much greatness in the 2010s.

So, Happy Friday: The band's seventh LP, Transference, is due out January 26 in North America via Merge and January 25 in Europe via Anti-.

The record features 11 songs produced by the band, including recent single "Got Nuffin", not to mention tracks called "I Saw the Light" and "Out Go the Lights". Lights, people, lights! Peruse the other song titles at your leisure below:

(New Spoon!)

Transference:
01 Before Destruction
02 Is Love Forever?
03 The Mystery Zone
04 Who Makes Your Money
05 Written in Reverse
06 I Saw the Light
07 Trouble Comes Running
08 Goodnight Laura
09 Out Go the Lights
10 Got Nuffin
11 Nobody Gets Me But You

I like them fine enough. I find the passionate love here a bit baffling, but to each his/her own.

I wouldn't say I'm a passionate fan, but I enjoy and play their records probably more than any other rock band out right now.

Perhaps that was a poor adjective to use; However you did just articulate my puzzlement a bit better.

MMJ might be a close second. I haven't played Z in a long time, It still moves, I only play a few songs, Evil Urges I play most of the way through, At Dawn I do play all the way through...but with Spoon I play all of their albums all the way through all the time.

Z is one of those albums that I love without fully understanding why I love it. There's just something about it.

Confirm this.

And I can get behind a new Spoon album: I've liked their last two more than the ones that people canonize so I'm hoping for more of the same.

I totally agree. Albums prior to Gimme Fiction were halfhearted and incomplete. If they can improve on GaGaGaGa the next album should be stellar.

On Gimme Fiction Britt started channeling his inner John Lennon as well as stepping up the lyrical content. All the records are good, but the last two are exceptional.

I think also the R&B influence came to the fore a bit more on the last couple.

Spoon are a strict lesson in efficiency, simplicity, and restraint that lots of other bands should heed.

Plus, Britt Daniel does things with song structure and chords that very few other human beings are capable of right now.

Just the fact that they covered Don't You Evah is pretty remarkable. It's something that no one else would have the balls to do in this decade.

it's so weird. I like quite a few of their songs and don't really dislike any of them but there's absolutely nothing with that band that really, truly grabs me and I'm continually puzzled by the rabid fandom. To each their own, I suppose.

Last 2 records and all before, soaked in layers of rhythm on top of each other or put together simple without the guitar freak out sessions or maybe the rare liveable few seconds worth. I'll admit that I really end up loving about half of songs on each album but the effort in all is admirable and unique if one enjoys that. I love how he can fill a 2 or 3 minute song all it needs with near perfection.

How many practice runs does a band need before they it right?

They always seem to give us the prospect of something great, fail to deliver on it and yet give us a little spark of potential brilliance that augurs well for a future that, in the fullness of time, never quite materializes.

Of course Spoon are better than most bands these days but that's why I'm placing them under a more expectant level of critique.

I guess I fall under the edge of this umbrella.

You will never win this argument Dale.

Spoon is the best band out there right now. hands down, no contest. Disagreeing with me is futile because you're fucking wrong.
