"Let’s be clear about what this means: If you’re a Netflix subscriber, you will no longer be able to rent new movies until 30 days after they’ve been released on DVD."

What the....????

I hope piracy destroys Hollywood. This is outrageous.

To be honest, this doesn't bother me much as a Netflix viewer. Most new films are shit anyway and I rarely await the release of a film on DVD. I'd much rather see more choices be placed under the watch instantly category and see more cult movies currently unavailable on DVD be released in that format.

Though I don't usually rent new movies, this is pretty retarded.

Yeah, I don't give a shit. I just started my first Netflix account, and I've already loaded up my queue with a ton of old movies I wanted to see.

And after reading the article, Netflix made a brilliant decision:

Netflix would be willing to accept this 30-day model for huge discounts on the movies after that period — perhaps as much as 50%. As a business decision, this would seem to make sense since 70% of Netflix’s main business is catalog (older) release rentals.

If this only applies to big studio releases--ie Transformers, GI Joe, etc then I could care less.

I just wait for DVD's to become less than $10 then I buy them. No need to return them. I haven't felt the "need" to rush out and see a new release in a long time. If it's my first time watching it, it's still new to me. If I own it, I can watch them again, or sell/ trade them.

Oh, its BS on a certain level for sure. I think, that if those numbers are correct in the article, that most subscribers won't care though. Most will get the newest movies from On Demand or some other means.

I can wait 30 more days to see a movie I missed at the theater. And even with the delay, Netflix has got to be one of the best entertainment bargains out there. People whine too much.

I should probably change my subscription plan, I think I've only turned around 10 movies by mail since instant netflix arrived on the xbox, I don't really need to have 3 movies out at a time.

You're entitled to your opinion, as am I

There's just far too many crappy remakes of slasher films, ridiculous sequels to films that never really needed one and just utter drivel like Year One coming out.

There are a few diamonds in the rough, but once again I can wait an additional 30 days if I never saw them in a theatre.

It may have bothered a few people that Transformers 3 would not have been available to Netflix viewers this week under the new rule, but most people wouldn't be truly whining about it.

The only thing dumb about it is they passed up the opportunity to fight Hollywood and bury Blockbuster. I don't really think Netflix should have a long-term strategy besides encouraging the Roku box industry and making their business digitally based.
DVD is dead, as is the video rental biz, so Blockbuster gets to hemorrhage for a bit longer while Netflix gets a good deal out of it.

If it weren't for the fact that Netflix had an immense more number of DVDs in stock, I'd probably join up with GreenCine. They seem to stock a lot more cult and harder to find discs.

Actually I agree with Promethium. Personally (note that word - I'm not telling you how far up your crack to get your panties) I do not mind waiting 30 days to see shit I missed in the theater. If I cared that much, I would've gone to the theater to see it. If I don't, then what's the fucking difference? (answer: "I WANT IT NOW I WANT IT NOW IWANTITIWANTITIWANTIT") And meanwhile if it helps them control costs and not fucking go out of business in 3 years, kickass. So far they've been pretty goddam savvy. I'm not ready to start armchair quarterbacking them yet.

Truth.

Z, go forth and make a blog illustrating this with humorous pictures with "1st World" in white text w/black outline in the upper right hand corner.

This all reminds of that Louis CK interview on Conan O'Brien. Everything's awesome and nobody's happy.

this really isn't that bad. just backload the newer movies at the end of your queue and bump them when they're released. i mean, you can put 500 movies in there so it's not like you'll be left with nothing to watch.

it will annoy me every now and then when there is a movie i really want to see, but in that case I can just get it from on demand or vudu/cinema now

While I think this is pretty stupid, I don't think it will bother me too much in the long term. I'm pretty patient with movies and don't need to see anything right away. Plus, the window of time between theater release and DVD release seems to be shrinking.

Discounted movies for Netflix = not raising prices for a long long time = subscribers win.
