I generally look forward to "Playin'" Sure they played it a TON but it was also the basis for a lot of interesting shit.

I like Playin -- and Promised Land, while a great song, does get a little same-y after it has opened, what? Half the sets we've heard?

I am not caught up yet. Listening to 28, and enjoying the crap out of it. The difference between it and 35 is interesting, but they are both top notch.

I expect I'll come out of surgery tomorrow humming St. Stephen :)

We have four left and suggest we suspend a day or so until Loog is fully and completely stoned.

I just put it on again, and yeah that was a great one.

I'm a little disappointed in 19 after the amazing awesome 8 disc run of 35>28.

Of course, typical Dead -- the momentum dies a little in the next song -- they all had to go get a fix before the run of Sugar Mag and Bid You Goodnight to close, LOL.

Yeah, there's no sense in doing a new Pick tomorrow with a new one when he's already a day behind and will be no doubt out of sorts for tomorrow.

That's not to say we don't have to not listen to the Dead.

I'm on 19 now, but I just started. Doubt I get through it before I have to shove off.

Starting 19 now. Bummed to read from yall that it's pedestrian despite that glowing review it's prefaced with. Well, must've been a different reviewer.

Good luck with the cut, Gar.

Dick's Picks Volume 24 is the twenty-fourth installment of the popular Grateful Dead archival series. It documents most of the concert from 3/23/74 at the Cow Palace in Daly City, California. The two-disc vault release is mastered in HDCD. This is a significant show in Dead history, being the first to use the complete Wall of Sound setup, a short-lived sound system abandoned after hardly two years due to high maintenance costs. They began work on it in 1973 and smaller versions of the system were used right up until this show. It also features the first performances of "Scarlet Begonias" and "Cassidy".

Good choice! Now, for those of us who have a copy of this already I have discovered that we are missing the first 'Playing in the Band' off disc 2. Fear not, I have procured us the entire show here:

i don't think i really knew about this wall of sound. i've heard the term used in reference to the dead, but always thought it was meant to do with their sound, which i don't think is at all accurate. pretty soft wall with many layers of papering that is. i guess it makes sense that it was a literal wall of sound.

having a terrible time getting through 19, dudes. at this point in the game, another lacklustre pick is serious labour to get through.

i'm proud of you guys (and scared for when this finally ends). i just finally finished off the 9 disc winterland '77 set in my car.

this new JGB disc i'm listening to is nice. nicky hopkins going off on piano, which makes for a different JGB sound which is always good.

btw, i met bruce hornsby at an ODU hoops game over the thanksgiving break. i guess he grew up in williamsburg and has always been a big hoops fan. kicking myself for not getting at least a cell phone pic with him.

I got the new Road Trips as well, from '68.

I already think 24 is laying 19 to rest. Sound is great, nice to have 'US Blues' start the show, although surprise surprise, there's 'Promised Land' laying in wait.

Hundred Year is one of my faves. Really god distillation of that period, and picks up some of the faves you don't get on Europe 72. Those were actually the first 2 dead discs I owned, after American Beauty/Workingman's Dead.
