Paper, are you trying to tell us Sasha Grey may not have impeccable taste in (non-adult) film &/or media?

(Weekend is her favourite film, if I'm not mistaken.)

Kinda strange that you know that monty, I'm not gonna lie.

Actually, I thought she did a really good job in The Girlfriend Experience....but it would seem her taste in movies is suspect.

TGE was a good show, no doubt... But I have to ask: why are you finding it strange I know a porn star's favourite film? I live for that shit.

Plus, I think it was on Fleshbot, at some point. That editorial division does a great job keeping up with the Crush Objects.

I guess I meant it's strange to know a porn star's favorite film in general...I'm certainly not surprised you know that information. But, when it boils down to it calling you strange would be like calling Sasha Grey a dirty whore.

I watched this last night. It surpassed by low expectations for it. I wish Apatow would only do dark comedies. But you're right in that it dragged at the end. However, the end gave us Eric Bana's character , which was my favorite.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind a progression into darker comedies, because I actually don't want to tire of Apatow, but I kind of am. I wouldn't say my expectations were high, for it, but they weren't rock-bottom low and I was pretty happy with it. Bana was great.

Well done, really enjoyable.

Recommended.

agreed

this whole kids/animation thing proved to be the ideal venue for wes anderson's brand of indie quirk

MUCH less grating than when executed by live action humans

Dug it. If you enjoy Bresson's quirky nature, and visual style, you'll enjoy this.

I watched The International the other day on one of the movie channels. There was obviously a pretty good movie in there, butchered by editing. I can see the producers looking at the dailies going "We've got a shoot out at The Guggenheim - that's arty enough - take out half the plot, and add more guns, so people will 'get it'"

It was a passable film that could have been a colder weather version of something like Blood Diamond had they had the balls for it.

Youth in Revolt - based on the book of the same name though with numerous omissions and head-scratching changes. i think this one's a little under the radar. it's about a teenage boy who develops an alterego who leads him to act in a way that he believes will reunite him with a girl he loves. michael cera stars in these roles. the normal character is everything you'd expect from cera by now. the alterego is different enough to make you notice, but he's certainly never winning an oscar. it's not a great movie, but it's really funny and has enough that's enjoyable for it to be a good matinee decision. (also stars zach galifianakis, steve buscemi, ray liotta, jean smart, fred willard, etc.)

Up in the Air - i haven't seen any movie that encapsulates the feeling of 2009 more than this one. a grand majority of this film deals with aspects of the past year that will be at the forefront of people's minds as they watch it. clooney turns in another fine role. the supporting actresses are excellent. the plot and themes run parallel to things discussed in every conversation these days. the only problem i see here, of course, is that it could be very dated in ten years. but today, pretty good and i understand why critics are going bananas over it.

It was painful to watch. Not entertaining from my perspective.

Recently:

Grey Gardens (the original Maysles documentary) - creepy, strange, off-putting
The Libertine - utter shite
the Wizard of Oz - crappy, really, but a holdover from my youth and I heart the Scarecrow
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - confirmation that I would never be good with drugs
Plaster Caster - very interesting actually, and Cynthia is quite entertaining (btw, Hendrix has a HUGE schlong)

How do you call The Wizard of Oz "crappy"?

Is that out on DVD? I heard about it what seems like years ago that it was being produced. There's a doc about groupies that talks about them but only in part, but I'd be interested to hear their story.

It's silly and frivolous and meant for children. I like it purely for nostalgic and "warm-fuzzy" reasons, but that doesn't mean it's a GREAT FILM.

And yes, got Plaster Caster through Netflix.

I really thought that this was meant about Plaster Caster.

It is pretty shitty though. Remember when it was first released the critics tore it about 14 new assholes, and it wasn't until a few generations were weaned on it that it became considered any kind of "good" movie - and that has to do more with people unwilling to leave their childhoods behind than with any kind of artistic merit within the film.

Saw these lately:

Eastern Promises - Pretty great. Viggo Mortensen played his role very well although I know I missed some of the enjoyment of the film due to the copy I downloaded didn't have the subtitles for all the Russian that was spoken throughout the film, one scene dragged on for what felt like at least 5 minutes and my girlfriend and I just sat there, deep sighing every minute or so.

Dig! - Fascinating music documentary. Had this for years and never watched it cause a friend told me it was crap. Glad I did. He was very wrong. Love the dude who's one and only roll in Brian Jonestown Massacre is to get wasted, grow huge chops, and play the tambourine.

Julie and Julia - Watched this last night. Girlfriend has been bugging me to get this for her for weeks and after putting it off for as long as I could I finally gave in and told her I would watch it with her. Somehow I had thought that this was about 2 ditzy women who shopped together, but quickly found out it was about legendary chef Julia Child. Being a huge foodie with a passion for cooking, I ended up really enjoying this film for the cooking theme. Meryl Streep was excellent as Julia Child

Up - Pretty great as expected but doesn't top finding nemo as my favorite pixar film.

The Hangover - Really liked this. Funny as shit.

And I'm an hour and a half into Inglorious Basterds and LOVING it so far. Tarantino's a genius.

Next up is The Cove.

"Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, The Cove follows a high-tech dive team on a mission to discover the truth about the international dolphin capture trade as practiced in Taiji, Japan. Utilizing state-of-the-art techniques, including hidden microphones and cameras in fake rocks, the team uncovers how this small seaside village serves as a horrifying microcosm of massive ecological crimes happening worldwide."

How could I forget. Sometimes 1939 feels just like yesterday.

I do not and have never loved or cared too much about this movie. It just strikes me as odd that someone would use the particular adjective "crappy" to describe it.

I bought this version of Oz for $1 Its not too bad. Some fun special effects for good ol' 1925. It also had Hardy (from Laurel & Hardy).

Yeah, whoops. That was my fault. Sometimes your attitude fools me into believing you might know what you're talking about.
