The golden era of ‘60s and ‘70s soul music boasts a great tradition for Christmas songs and, following in the footsteps of classic Christmas albums from the Motown stable and James Brown, Strut enter the festive spirit this November with the first ever Yuletide compilation on the label, IN THE CHRISTMAS GROOVE, bringing together 12 rare soul, funk and blues cuts rediscovered from Christmases past. Featuring tracks often only ever released as obscure 45 B-sides, the compilation tracks one-off moments when the good groove met the jingle bells to devastating effect.

Artists include bluesman Jimmy Reed, jamming hard on ‘Christmas Present Blues’ and Calypsonian Capt. Elmo McKenzie with a lilting Yuletide Caribbean ode on Barbados label Trex. UK-based session collective Zebra weigh in with a festive slice of gritty Afro-rock and kids choir Harlem Children’s Chorus’ paint a poignant picture of ‘Black Christmas’ in the ghetto. We also include some useful covers of Christmas favourites. Late, lamented New Orleans Godfather Eddie Bo produces Isaac Clarke on a solid version of ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’ for his Seven B label and The Black On White Affair out of Seattle rock out on an amazing re-work of ‘Auld Lang Syne’. All in all, an essential diggers’ grab bag for the festive season and a refreshing alternative to the traditional Christmas fare. Early reaction from Lapland is encouraging: “Sinatra and Jim Reeves are certainly legends but the same songs each Christmas are driving me and Rudolph a bit potty, quite frankly,” explains Santa Claus. “This is the sh*t I want in my sleigh!” IN THE CHRISTMAS GROOVE is released on CD and digital on November 23rd and features an extensive booklet including original sleeve artwork and sleeve notes by James Maycock of Mojo magazine.

Tracklist:
01. Jimmy Reed – Christmas Present Blues
02. Electric Jungle – Funky Funky Christmas
03. Funk Machine – Soul Santa
04. Milly & Silly – Gettin’ Down For Xmas
05. The Harlem Children’s Chorus – Black Christmas
06. Wild Honey – Angel’s Christmas
07. Captain Elmo McKenzie & The Roosters – Home On Christmas Day
08. Soul Saints Orchestra – Santa’s Got A Bag Of Soul
09. J.D. McDonald – Boogaloo Santa Claus
10. Zebra – Christmas Morning (Sean Bonniwell Re-Edit)
11. Harvey Averne Band – Let’s Get It Together This Christmas
12. Jimmy Jules & The Nuclear Soul System – The New Year
13. The Black On White Affair – Auld Lang Syne

My favorite Xmas disc is Psychostick's Flesh Eating Rollerskate Holiday Joyride, with thrashy-metal tunes like Holiday Hate (Christmas music overplayed, Every minute of every day!), Jolly Old Sadist (And I wanted just like every year, A new liver & a truck of beer!), and last but not least, Jingle Bell Metal (Jingle Bell Metal, Fucking things up with a double bass pedal!).

This was too mellow for my Xmas mix, but it's an awesome song nevertheless.

yeah i can't access any of the rapidshare stuff. boo.

i've already got a "lively" xmas mix, so the mellow stuff for my new mix would be great - Cocteau Twins and The Band are perfect.

oh and if someone can tell me what the hell this song is about that would be great:

John Cale - Child's Christmas In Wales

With mistletoe and candle green
To halloween we go
Ten murdered oranges bled on board ship
Lends comedy to shame
The cattle graze bold uprightly
Seducing down the door
To saddle swords and meeting place
We have no place to go

Then wearily the footsteps worked
The hallelujah crowds
Too late but wait the long legged bait
Tripped uselessly around
Sebastopol adrianapolis
The prayers of all combined
Take down the flags of ownership
The walls are falling down

A belt to hold
Columbus too, perimeters of nails
Perceived the mamma's golden touch
Good neighbours were we all

hear it on this page: http://obscuresound.com/?p=628
