Philadelphia guitarist extraordinaire Jack Rose has died

Jack Rose, whose masterful acoustic guitar playing earned him the admiration of many fans and humbled other musicians, has died, Arthur magazine has reported.

Friends say Rose, 38, died this morning of an apparent heart attack.

Our sincere condolensces to Rose's friends and family.

**A true talent. A bear of a man with a soul of Gold. A friend of the Suoni who will be truly missed**

I was fortunate to see him play my favourite room in Montreal 2 or 3 summers ago. Any other stops he made here I slept on. In fact I slept at the one I did see. Seated with a flask of scotch I was pulled and lulled in and out of consciousness through the latter deeper parts of his set. Truly mesmerizing. Now, everything of his I listen to – except for Jack Rose & The Black Twig Pickers, which I'm hearing for the first time now – sounds sadder. In some ways he did John Fahey better than John Fahey.

 Thanks, jsh.

This is incredible. Its massive. Not only track-wise, but length-wise at over 6.5 hours (!) of music. Theres a lot of ground to cover here, and I've listened to it one time through today.

Firstly, my list of recordings I need to seek out got way longer. So many incredible musicians showing up, ones that I had never ventured into, and ones that I had previously written off based on one single. One of the best things about it immediately is how much of a spread JR's music had...from Takoma style picking to droney ragas that melt yr brain, he moved with efficiency through many-a-style. Byron Coley's heartfelt goodbye at first seems overstated, until it hits you that yr listening to a comp of people who loved and admired his music clocking in nearly 7 hours. Then, his statements make sense (even if they give off that Hemingway vibe).

Also, is this the first solo material from Stuart Braithwaite from Mogwai? Its only 1:30, but I'd love to hear more.

I can't believe you got through this in the next day. Clearly, it ended up in good hands. I agree with you. I purchased it for the long list of some very influential artists, and will be seeking out music by all the others subsequently. There are some stunning contributions here, and it's amazing that they manage to maintain a consistent sentiment, sonically and emotionally, throughout. It's another thing that goes to show the profound effect of the man, beyond just his music. I previously knew only his music. It's saying something that a tribute of this quality and magnitude (albeit I've only heard maybe a quarter of it yet) has come together so quickly after his passing, with his inspiration.

naturally, bardo pond contributes the best piece to this collection (thus far). of course they collect the 20 minute plus pieces all at the end.

I ordered that DVD. It was only $15.

My favorite tracks were from Black Twig Pickers, Hans Chew, Danny Paul Grody, Spectre Folk, and Un. Yeah, putting those longer tracks at the end was kind of an interesting choice. It would've been nice to have those mixed in. Don't know how much thought was put into running order to be honest. Still, its an amazing collection of so many styles as I mentioned earlier. Since getting that I've been on a huge kick of Takoma picking/folk. I've been smitten with Billy Faier's "Banjo" record which is unfortunately OOP, but was released around 1969 on Takoma. Also, Suni McGrath's "Cornflower Suite" album which is AMAZING. Can't believe this stuff isn't repressed. McGrath's record was on a Takoma-inspired label in Silver Springs, MD called Aldelphi. They still exist but haven't rereleased it. Mostly they rerelease their older blues records (which, are worth yr time as well).

Absolutely fantastic guitar playing. Any Fahey/Basho/James Blackshaw fans surely need to hear this for all the great melodies and techniques. What a find this was for me. Some of the most fantastic folk music I've ever heard.

Quote:
This is BANJO, the album I did for Takoma in the seventies. As usual I hated it until about twenty years went by and then I could hear what I did without the self criticism of what I didn’t do echoing in the back of my head. No vocals. All Banjo. All original tunes.

I emailed him about this record, and he said all his records are available for FREE on his website. Just go to his main page, and click on the album covers. Being a banjo fan, and beginner player, these are completely up my alley.

Wait...one more. Sean Smith. He put out that record on Tompkins Square with a couple of other Berkeley guitarists a few years ago. He's been semi-prolific. One of his records that was put out on Gnomelife is being rereleased here soon on Three Lobed, I believe. Anyway, here's a free download of one of his live shows. Sound is great.

Some good obscure stuff. Tons of different genres represented

This very well could take you days/weeks to get through all the stuff.

just getting through sunburned's contribution here, and really enjoying it more than much of theirs i've heard before.
and feeling inspired to pick up my own guitar, as of late!
