As some sort of cultural artifact for the time capsule this has to be the biggest soundtrack.

I mean, was there another soundtrack that sent ripples through American/Canadian culture like this one did?

The rest you listed had their moments but yeah, they're pretty much indie fare and a good "collection" of songs. I'd put Almost Famous on there if that's the criteria.

I'll throw out:

Once
There Will Be Blood

Also, the guy who did American Beauty and Six Feet Under. Not so much that I'm a big fan but anything that came after those that had a remotely similar sound was described as "sounds like Six Feet Under" or something. Pretty tough thing to do.

Personally, I like most any soundtrack Clint Mansell does. Moon, for one, is awesome. Requiem for a Dream ain't to bad either.

I'll ditto O Brother and Kill Bill.

And throw in Ghost World for good measure.

People seemed to go age shit over those Lord of the Rings soundtracks, though I always held them in genuine disdain. While not the key reason, the music of those movies certainly played a role in me saying "I never want to see those movies again".
