I just got that remastered Beatles box set, and I was flipping through the discs and artwork and came to the realization that a) I had only really listened to 3 Beatles albums in their entirety, and b) there are actual Beatles songs I've never heard before.

I'm not hugely surprised by either revelation, really. I came of age at a time when the Beatles were ubiquitous and, of course, back then there were no free shortcuts like downloads, so it never seemed like a good investment to buy music that was all over radio and television already. I never owned any Beatles other than the compilation The Beatles 1967-70 until the CD age, when I broke down and picked up the white album and the Live at the BBC anthology. Other than that, the only albums I'd really ever heard were friend's copies of Sgt. Peppers and Abbey Road.

Which gets me to this point in my life. 2009 - almost 2010 - and faced with a serious gotdamn treasure trove of Beatles music. I feel kind of suddenly fortunate, in that I now get to (sort of) approach this like a virgin and relive the creative growth and development of one of the 20th century's most important artists. So I'm starting at Please Please Me and working my way forward.

This should be fun.

Nice. I'm anticipating this as a Xmas gift and was going to do the same.

I'd go the other way.

I'm so burnt on the later stuff that the old ones sound the freshest. I like the memories associated with the older recordings, too. They were squabbling towards the end and that taints it for me a bit.

You're a lucky fellow. :)

I've gotten 4 of the discs so far and was amazed at how many songs I had never heard before. It was definitely a pleasant surprise.

I know it's no secret that they're my favorite band ever, but as you're listening, check out the release dates and the songwriting credits. The quality of the output is even more ridiculous when you consider those dates.

I didn't know they did Buck Owen's "Act Naturally" on Help! until very recently. This would be an interesting project - I used to own all of their stuff, but had a strong White Album/Abbey Road bias.

Stereo or Mono?

Regardless, yeah, that's pretty much the pinnacle gift for any music lover.

Yeah, it's hard to even fathom what they accomplished between '63 and '68. That's 5 years with a work ethic that shames most humans, let alone the quality of work attained.

I actually did this when I first got the mono box. Hard Days Night ripped my ears off it was so good. I'll probably do it again when y'all do it.

Much like Radcliffe's revelation, I've never actually listened to any of the following in their entirety:

Please Please Me
With The Beatles
Help!
Yellow Submarine
Past Masters

I really should just treat myself to this.

'There's A Place' is as spooky and weird as anything that came out of Mississippi.

And I've said this a thousand times before but Ian MacDonald's 'Revolution In The Head', a song by song breakdown of the Beatles career, is the perfect companion piece to listening to the music.

Just up the whole stereo box if you've got it.

I've got nothing to add to this except that the Beatles can and will still blow your fucking mind.

Quote:
Once "Please Please Me" rocketed to number one, the Beatles rushed to deliver a debut album, bashing out Please Please Me in a day. Decades after its release, the album still sounds fresh, precisely because of its intense origins. As the songs rush past, it's easy to get wrapped up in the sound of the record itself without realizing how the album effectively summarizes the band's eclectic influences. Naturally, the influences shine through their covers, all of which are unconventional and illustrate the group's superior taste. There's a love of girl groups, vocal harmonies, sophisticated popcraft, schmaltz, R&B, and hard-driving rock & roll, which is enough to make Please Please Me impressive, but what makes it astonishing is how these elements converge in the originals. "I Saw Here Standing There" is one of their best rockers, yet it has surprising harmonies and melodic progressions. "Misery" and "There's a Place" grow out of the girl group tradition without being tied to it. A few of their originals, such as "Do You Want to Know a Secret" and the pleasantly light "P.S. I Love You," have dated slightly, but endearingly so, since they're infused with cheerful innocence and enthusiasm. And there is an innocence to Please Please Me. The Beatles may have played notoriously rough dives in Hamburg, but the only way you could tell that on their first album was how the constant gigging turned the group into a tight, professional band that could run through their set list at the drop of a hat with boundless energy. It's no surprise that Lennon had shouted himself hoarse by the end of the session, barely getting through "Twist and Shout," the most famous single take in rock history. He simply got caught up in the music, just like generations of listeners did.
