"The Brian Kelly era is over. Despite having the same .583 winning percentage as Bob Davie, Ty Willingham, and Charlie Weis, Kelly was let go today after finishing 6-6 and the Irish accepted a bid to the LifeFail.com Bowl.

Speculated candidates for the job include: University of Georgia Asst. Head Coach Kirby Smart, South Carolina Head Coach Turner Gill, Florida Governor Urban Meyer, and of course, considering the money available, Alabama Board of Regents President, Special Envoy to the Sons of the Confederacy, and "Honorary Bear" Nick 'Saint' Saban.

I think Kelly is a fine hire, but weren't Notre Dame's problems defense related, and isn't the Cincinnati Defense relatively soft this season. Maybe he'll bring in a top notch Defensive coordinator with him, but I wouldn't expect him to lead them to a BCS within three years.

In Kelly's defense, I think there was only 1 returning starter from last year on defense, and he was only here 3 years so he was still using players not in his recruiting.

Douchebag.

I will give him a break if he only had one starter coming back, but recruiting argument holds no water with me.
The Pelini Brothers are using mostly Callahan players on the Husker Defense and went from something like the 111th or 114th ranked Defense to the 9th ranked Defense in two years. Granted they had a precipitous decline in offense during that time period, but that's a whole different can of worms.
I will however admit that it appears that Cincinnati is giving up roughly the same amount of points this year compared to last year, when the Bearcats were in the top 20 for least yards against them.
They are giving up 20.8 pts this year and gave up 20.2pts last year.

Also Tim Brown and a host of ND grad have said the same thing tonight on ESPN. They like him as a coach, but hope he brings in someone to make the defense more stout against the run and stop people from scoring at will against the Irish.

I still think Timmy was calling Kelly a douchebag for leaving, esp. before the bowl game. I realized that UC was sunk when I looked up for friggin' catholic Kelly is over Thanksgiving. I don't even know where Assumption College is, but I'll bet it's in new england and I'll bet that it's real, real catholic.

Yes, I was calling Kelly the Douchebag, more so for lying to the players telling them that he wasn't leaving to their face, only to leave a matter of days later. Kelly may be Catholic, but he is a hard core democrat. The concept of a catholic democrat blows my mom's mind, because democrats want to kill babies.
Assumption is in the Boston area, and I assume it is a very indoctrinated catholic area.

I never really thought Timmy was calling me Douchebag, and even if he was, it didn't bother me.

Hey TJ42: Are you fucking 12? No coach in America is going to stay at a nothing program like Cincinnati when they can go to Notre Dame. Nobody. Get over it.

Jim Harbaugh has allegedly been offered a deal by Kansas. I'm not sure what Stanford is offering him for next year, but his current salary is only $750,000. KU was offering Houston Nutt 2.5 million for the job and was paying Mangino 2.3 million last year.

Wow, Stanford is really cheap and KU really overpays. Very out of whack.

I'm sorry, I didn't know that #3 in the country qualified as a "nothing program". Nippert stadium may be small, and there might not be indoor practice facilities yet, but they are in the works and will be finished long before Kelly can turn around Notre Dame.

I'm not mad he left. We all knew it was his dream job and he had the clause in his contract to leave if that job was offered. It's the way he did it. Don't look these 20 year old kids in the face, telling them how much you love it in Cincy and how you aren't going to leave only to leave days later. Kelly had the chance to be a lifetime hero in Cincinnati and is giving it up to pursue his dream. I'm ok with that. I am over it. We will move on with someone else. I just don't wish him any luck in South Bend.

Sorry TJ, but this is what makes Cincy a nothing program.

http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/mi ... ng_pct.php

The Bearcats rank #84 out of #120 for all-time win percentage. His contract at Cincinnati was worth 1.2-1.35 million a year and the Bearcats have been 4-4 in mostly 2nd rate bowls during the last decade or so. Also look at Kelly's record compared to that of any previous Bearcat coach including current Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio. Losing a coach to MSU, pretty much makes it clear that Cincinnati is a stepping stone job.

I never said UC had a good program, but dismissing a recent surge as "nothing" because of a lack of history is pretty narrow minded. It is no secret that we've always been considered a stepping stone program. I never impied otherwise.

Cincinnati is first of all where Oscar Robertson played, secondly where Bob Huggins couldn't graduate anyone. They've had a nice little 2-3 year run but even their most optimistic fans have to realize that they will be a middle of the pack Big East team at best most years.

And really, I'm not being dismissive, just laying the reality of the situation on you: If the program had any cache, they A. wouldn't be playing a meaningless bowl game despite having a 12-0 record and B. wouldn't be losing their coach to a team that hasn't done anything since the Clinton administration

I agree with you, except about the optimistic fans and the meaningless bowl. We can't help it there are so many other undefeated teams and our conference is well balanced.

Al Golden or Kevin Sumlin for the Bearcat job.

Temple played a bit better defense, but lost to more dubious foes. Houston had an unstoppable offense, but can't play any defense.

I've heard Skip Holtz wants the Kansas gig, if they don't get Harbaugh or hire Turner Gill.
Lew Perkins who is AD at Kansas was the AD at Connecticut when he was hired there.
Butch Jones of Central Michigan, Kelly's previous stomping grounds befre Cincy is also a possibility for the Bearcat gig.
His annual salary is alread 1.16 million, so it wouldn't be that much of a step up unless the Cincinnati is paying out the big bucks this time around.
Kansas has the Bigger stadium, is a member of a more prestigious conference and pays more currently for their position.
If the Big East is as strong as Timmy thinks, one would guess that it is easier to win in the Big 12, specifically the Big 12 North.

Turner Gill will be named head football coach at Kansas, Yahoo Sports has learned.

Gill, 47, coached at the University of Buffalo from 2006-09. He went 20-30 overall and 14-18 in the Mid-American Conference.

Gill had losing seasons in three of his four years, including a 5-7 mark in 2009.

In 2008, Buffalo went 8-6 and won the MAC title.

I wish him luck, since he's a top notch guy, but this might be his last head coaching gig. Kansas ruins a lot of coaching careers or at least irreparably damages them. I hope he enjoys taking a beating from his alma mater for at least a few years, and will be rooting for him to take them to a bowl within two seasons.

Kansas: Where they execute abortionists AND hire black college football coaches. I like it.

Congrats to Mark Ingram on the Heisman, but I can't fucking believe Colt McCoy finished above Suh.
They might as well disqualify Defensive players from even being a candidate, if they can't finish better than 4th in a weak year.

My FB feed is mostly people saying they were hoping Pelini would have a freak out over the results.
Now I'm watching the Husker Basketball team take on Obama's Brother in Law's OSU Beavers and the Husker Volleyball team play #2 Texas for a Final Four birth. So far the Huskers are winning both.

Yeah, The Huskers are 2-0 against the Pac-10 conference, but have losses to Saint Louis and a less than stellar Creighton squad this year.

Agreed. And I've got 6 or 10 years on you.

It's been ugly thus far this season. If UW and Cal are the class of the league, then it's going to get uglier.
