My wife is gonna send me a iTunes card and I need some suggestions for my listening pleasure. I bought a 16G nano for this deployment so i will never be without tunes. I have about 7G's left so keep the suggestions coming. Tania, can you sticky this thread?

We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls

pitchfork Wrote:
This debut by FatCat's latest Scottish discovery, We Were Promised Jetpacks, is exactly what you'd expect from the label that gave us the Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit: an anthemic collection of heavily accented singing, insistent rhythms, and intense sincerity. But just because it's not surprising doesn't mean it's not appealing. With songs that marry tough riffs to tender glockenspiels and find a balance between muscular, masculine drumming and singer Adam Thompson’s vulnerable, striving warble, there is much to like within These Four Walls.

It's on eMusic too.

probably no chance of this, but are you able to post pictures of innocuous, non-sensitive scenery and activity from where you will be stationed?

im always curious about what day to day life is like for someone who is stationed in a warzone

Also, is there a window of time where you won't be able to download stuff?

Lots of people should be posting their top 20's for the year in the next couple of weeks.

just by going what you said

The Rammones - s/t
The first and best album. Simple, straightforward punk that sounds fresher than anything else out there.

The Clash - London Calling, s/t
Both are really good. Fun messy punk with better songwriting than the Sex Pistols.

White Stripes - White Blood Cells
Stripped down with a lot of distortion. "Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground" "Fell in Love with a Girl"

Get Up Kids- Four Minute Mile
Debut from one of the pioneers of emo and one of the few credible bands in the genre. Not as dreamy as early Jimmy Eat World but more honest with great songwriting.

Suicide - s/t
Early proto punk. Pretty much influenced the eighties through its moody minimal and noisy style. More accessible than Joy Division, Public Image Limited, Gang of Four.

Sunny Day Real Estate- Diary
Straightforward mid nineties emo.

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Proto rock with amazing songwriting. Godfather of most alternative music. Most accessible thing he ever did. Doesn't sound dated at all. Goes good with the Shins, Why?, The Cars

current

Phoenex - Wolfgang
Just cause. Fun, loud, modern retro rock. Better than the Killers. Hasn't left my CD player since I got it.

Why? - Alopecia
Energetic, crazy album that's all over the place and still accessible.

Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica
Indie band's major label debut. Great songwriting, diversity and accessibility.
"3rd Planet"

Richard Hell & The Voidoids - Blank Generation
There is an undercurrent of rockabilly. Or maybe that's just because the Stray Cats ripped off the chord progression from the title track that I hear it? Anyway, it's a great album, nonetheless and contains some of the best guitar playing ever on a rock and roll album, courtesy Robert Quine and Ivan Julian.

thanks for your input everyone, the reason I want this thread sticky is so I can easily reference it when I get iTunes cards for the wifey in my care packages. I will try to post non-sensitve scenery pics and such as time and mission dicates...one question, I have an iPod nano which can has video camera. It's it difficult to transfer to files from iTunes to YouTube to here?

The Black Flag-First Four Years compilation (pre-rollins) is excellent 80's punk.

Are you using a public computer to download? Do you have a personal storage area on it? I'm pretty sure the Obners would help you find anything you want, Itunes or no, if you have a place to put it.

Ben Gibbard put out an album with Jay Farrar recently. I haven't heard it but I like both those guys. Also, if you haven't picked up Jimmy Eat World's 10th Anniversary show (they play Clarity in it's entirety) you should. it's pretty cool.
