To be a the DFC at another SEC school? Why would he? in 3 years he'll be an HC at an SEC school, or at UW, or someplace similar.

I haven't known a single Saban DC go to a HC position without having to be a DC at another school first. I thought the general consensus was that it's really Saban's defense. Also, Kirby is a defensive back coach just like Saban, and he's been w/ Saban since LSU. How do you know this guy really isn't just a jock strap holder?

I think there's a lot a motivation to prove he can do it on his own.

And he's a Bainbridge, GA native and UGA alumnus/former player that bleeds RED & BLACK. And he was in my frat, YEE HAW!!

The simple answer though is that you never move down in coaching if you can avoid it: The DC at Bammer vs. the DC at UGA is a move down even if you are essentially Saban's boy.

Also, this tidbit from another board DWIWYW:
Quote:
Hmmm...little birdie has just told me to keep an ear for Eric Schumann to be GA's next DC. Currently DC at UAB, worked with Van Gorder as a position coach. UGA's plane did go to B'ham yesterday morning. If true, much of Dawgnation will be disappointed I think.

If he can bring the same sort of student/athlete relationship that UAB is famous for to Athens, I'm all for it....  :(

I realize we don't have any really hardcore Big 10 fans here, but are there any opinions on the expansion?
I think Mizzou wants out of Big 12 really, really bad. Nebraska has never been to happy with Big 12 arrangements, but needs the Texas recruiting base and has the classic albeit not regularly played rivalry with Oklahoma. Also Osborne basically squelched any rumors of the Husker Athletic Department meeting with any Big 10 officials.
Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Notre Dame and Syracuse have all been mentioned, although Paterno has stated he is adamantly opposed to Notre Dame. I just can't see Syracuse giving up its position in Big East Hoops to be a Football doormat in the Big Ten.
An article in the Chicago Tribune today mentioned adding three to five teams to make a 14-16 super conference.

I think the natural addition is Iowa State, but more likely it'll be Rutgers.

Would love to see ISU in the Big 10, though, with, maybe, Boise moving into the Big 12. Utah & BYU would look nice in the Pac-10, too. Nevada-Reno & Hawai'i to the Mountain West. Rump WAC & Conference-USA merge to form a leviathan that will destroy us all.

I've always thought that adding Notre Dame makes the most sense for everybody (with the possible exception of Notre Dame themselves but fuck them)

Iowa State is one step from being a MAC school, their Athletic Department is in serious trouble. Besides the rivalry with Iowa, I only see them adding strength to Big 10 Wrestling.

If Iowa State or Missouri would leave, look for Colorado to try to make a jump to the Pac-10 and Nebraska to form some conference with some of the old WAC and Big 8 schools.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP)—Hawkeye fans in Iowa could be without the Orange Bowl on cable TV.

A dispute between Mediacom and Sinclair Broadcasting Group could leave 700,000 cable subscribers in 11 states without some local channels on Jan. 1. That includes about 400,000 in Iowa—and most could lose the channel televising the Jan. 5 Orange Bowl between the Hawkeyes and Georgia Tech as well as the BCS Championship and the Super Bowl.

The dispute threatens to knock off Sinclair stations to Mediacom in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Sinclair spokesman Barry Faber says he’s “very pessimistic” an agreement will be reached.

Mediacom spokeswoman Phyllis Peters says the company has asked the Federal Communications Commission to prevent a disruption of service.

FT, what's your take on this, Timmy can chime in too:

Irish staff update
Notre Dame’s staff appears to be taking shape. Early word is Brian Kelly will bring offensive coordinator Jeff Quinn, defensive coordinator Bobby Diaco, special teams coach Mike Elston and quarterbacks coach Greg Forest with him to South Bend. It looks as if defensive backs coach Kerry Coombs, tight ends coach Lorenzo Guess and running backs coach Tim Hinton won’t be invited.

I can see why he takes Quinn with him, but I expected him to go outside the Cincy program to hire a higher profile Defensive Coordinator.

Also
FYI, the new coach at Marshall is Doc Holliday, ha ha ah.

I don't like them taking another central michigan coach. I wouldn't be surprised if quinn joins kelly. He will also take a lot of great local recruits with him and it will serve uc right for not taking more time to find a better guy. What they are getting is a coach who fits the players we will have next year instead of one who knows the city, the program and the university. This will come back to bite us in the ass either when he leaves for a better job or when he fails.

The torch has been passed. It's thrilling, that the legacy continues, but maddening it's at another campus. & UAB, no less.

WORST COACHING HIRE: Bill Callahan, Nebraska
In 2003, then-AD Steve Pedersen fired sixth-year coach Frank Solich (despite his .750 winning percentage) and replaced him with the ex-Oakland Raiders coach. The school's first outside hire in 42 years, Callahan scrapped Nebraska's long-synonymous option offense in favor of an NFL-style passing attack, alienated fans and former players, oversaw the program's first losing season since 1961 and won one division title in four seasons. His last team (in 2007) went 5-7 and allowed a school-record 455 points.

Wow, that blurb explains a whole lot of nothing regarding the reason for the dispute.

Do Tell

I was simply posting it because the state of Iowa might not be able to watch some of the big football games and I found that humorous. I have Time Warner Cable, so I am unfamiliar with Mediacom.

Didn't Stoops win a title with John Blake's players, and he has failed to win one since recruiting his own?
J/K
John Blake was the reason Ndamukong Suh came to Nebraska, and he also turned Adam Carriker into a stud DL when he coached here from 2004-2006. He is a hell of a recruiter and a Defensive coach, he just isn't a big time program head coach. I don't think Callahan is fit to be head coach at any level.

meh

Whatever staff Kelly's comfortable with is fine with me, unless they are proven to be incompetent twats like Weis and crew.

I guess there is somewhat of a concern that he'd be so wedded to the same defensive coordinator that helmed such a porous defense all season long. My leash with that dude is gonna be EXTREMELY short.

UNLV

EAST:
Nebraska
TCU
SMU

That was the 3rd time Nebraska lost to them this decade. It was just depressing because it occurred at home, something that hadn't happened during my lifetime. At least the Cyclones made a bowl game.

The Huskers also almost lost to Ball State two years ago, so I have nothing but respect for the MAC.

The comment was in regards to Iowa State's facilities and budgets being the caliber of the MAC, and not up to the standards of the Big 12 or Big 10.

As for JoePa, I don't blame him for hating on ND. They were given a chance to join the Big 10 once and essentially said "Fuck You, we're better than all of you". I don't know why you'd ask them again, unless you are truly desperate to have them for a member.
