Okay, so it's a flawed list (what isn't?) and maybe even a flawed concept for true music geeks, like most of us. (I don't think that I would ever qualify as a "hipster," and I doubt that many of us do.) But it's still kinda fun.

Here's the link: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... v-20091220

Quote:
No, no — the headline's not referring to you. Heaven forbid. But someone like you listens to a lot of cool and/or unusual music, and refuses to sample the good stuff right under his or her nose because it's "mainstream." Lots of hipsters know about the very latest bands, having scoured the Web for the newest undiscovered thing, but are coiled to backlash as soon as others "get it." And, while the music world needs hipsters to help others find new stuff, it's best not to think them omniscient — after all, there's lots of great music they're too cool to notice.

amusing article concept, somewhat head-scratching execution.

The Willie Nelson/Asleep At The Wheel is in my Top 20. Its a great record, and lots of fun. Potato Hole, I think, we can all agree was ok, but not the smash-bang up record we all hoped it would be. I like that they included the PJ record, because I do feel like some people are above their music. Doesn't sound like anything else that they've put out. Granted, its not their greatest accomplishment on record, but its good nonetheless.

I haven't heard of half of those albums, maybe I'm too cool to know that they exist.

I think the main flaw with the piece is outlined in the quote that Todd posted. A lot of musical critics/commentators that focus on traditional/mainstream music are working under the assumption that "hipsters" don't like mainstream music. While I agree that most don't like modern mainstream artists, they still flock to a lot of non-current mainstream/commercial artist for inspiration.
From that list I think only Lady Gaga would clearly take a lot of flack from "hipsters, the rest of those albums were done by well respected or indie friendly artists, example Norah Jones and her collaborations with Will Sheff, Ryan Adams and M Ward in the past. I think only a true douchebag would take issue with Willie Nelson or someone as generally obscure as Sarah Jarosz and Danny Balis. I think the most you'd get out of most "hipsters" is a meh from most of these artists.
It also might have something to due with my location and the general love for Americana/Alt-Country, but I think the Rhett Miller and Willie Nelson albums were beloved by local indie artists who perform in that style

Yeah, Willie gets short shrift from no one, Rhett Miller's album was overlooked most likely because his first solo album had one good song, and The Old 97s sorta lost their mojo early in this decade.

And hipsters fucking LOVE Gaga. Everyone loves Gaga - that shit's the jam.

I'm glad you posted this, because I'd like to hear that Danny Balis album.

It's almost like they wanted to make an overlooked albums list, but decided they'd get more run if they bagged on the hipsters.

I'm cool enough own 3 of those records-Rhett Miller, Booker T, and Pearl Jam and cool enough to like em'. I don't think any of em' will make my top 20.

"Potato Hole" is cool enough to have been nominated for 2 grammys.

That Krayolas album is really good. I've been mining it for mixes all year.

The Willie & Asleep At The Wheel is pretty tasty. Don't know the rest, and not crazy to find out.

I CAN'T BELIEVE DANNY BALIS IS ON THAT LIST!!!

Dude's regular gig is as the producer of the afternoon drive sports talk radio show here in Dallas, which he lucked into about a decade ago after having been a mere listener like myself. He's been in several random local bands as a sideline over the years, and finally released that solo album a few months ago, but I had NO IDEA it was big time enough to make a list such as this!

small world...
