I call on you Ob once again for suggestions for Femderris' mom.

I get her a cd every year. I got nuth right now.

For reference, these have been given in the past and went over like gangbusters:

Buena Vista Social Club - s/t
Over The Rhine - The Trumpet Child
James Hunter - The Hard Way
Robert Plant/Alison Krauss - Raising Sand

Anyone? I figures this might also serve as a thread for others to see who are also looking to give that cousin some new, but not lame, music.

good call on the OTR

tends to be a good bridge between collegiates and faux-hippie parents

Haven't heard this, but it seems like a winning suggestion

Findlay Brown Love Will Find You

Image

Produced by Bernard Butler, sounds like an ultra-swoony Chris Isaak mixed with a touch of rockabilly and a whole lotta Phil Spector. Moms will undoubtedly dig.

(Just noticed it's a 2010 release on Amazon, even though the download leaked in early '09 - so this may not help much)

Riyl rog?

Sounds like a contender rads but yeah, looks like a January 5th release.

Thought about that Buddy and Julie Miller since it was produced by T-bone and used many of the same players as on Raising Sand. The sound is there but Julie Miller's voice isn't as honey sweet as Krauss's and some of the tunes are just downright too sad (for this particular purpose)

Diane Birch - off the top of my head I'd say RIYL Carole King, 70's singer/songwriters. it's pretty good...seen it showing up on a few best of lists.

I think I heard this at my FiL's house at Thanksgiving. If so, its pretty goog.

I'd like to second Willie and the Wheel which I like immensely but it may be a little "traditional" for typical parent...i'm actually just going to burn my mom a copy.

Just see what's selling at Starbucks, and that'll point you in the right direction.

The norah jones mentioned is there, but willie and the wheel (which i was also going to suggest) is not.

or you could just get her a best of sarah mclachlan. Surefire.

I'd shy away from Willie & The Wheel to fill your needs. The Snorah Jones would be a pretty good fit, I think. The Knopfler/Emmy Lou is great- if you don't mind going back a few years earlier, Knopfler's Sailing To Philadelphia would work as well, I think- duets with James Taylor and V. Morrison. Great sonics, too.

Go back a bunch of years and hand her some Jayhawks.

Or more recent, Tift Merritt.

Love this record, but unless KK's mom likes Willie Nelson's voice backed by big band jazz and western swing, I doubt she'd like it.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I picked up that Diane Birch at Best Buy but when I was in Starbucks an hour after that, I found Paul McCartney's Live in New York City and picked it up as well. She was apparently a Beatles fanatic as a youngster.

2 discs of the concert AND the DVD for $15! Did he have a special arrangement with starbucks for this release?
