The story of Townshend's former S.O. status is starting to gain some heat in the news. I think they're still gonna play the SB, because way too much money is at stake here--with advertisements and publicity. Also, I highly doubt the Fed is going to step in, and tell Pete he can't enter U.S. soil.

This fucking pisses me off.

-- it is not a new story, it was pretty well publicized when he got busted and blows my mind that they can credit a reporter with breaking a story when all it took was a halfway decent memory.
-- Pete was sexually abused as a child and claims that he was researching the problem of child pornography rather than consuming it when he got busted. I know that most reactionary parents who think that every stranger in the world exists solely to abuse their children will call it a lame alibi, but I've read some of his autobiographical stuff on child abuse and personal addiction and FWIW, I believe him.

I also wish that he'd been able to finish the book--people need to know that the child porn traded on the IRC channels is not naked pictures of high school cheerleaders. While helping a public defender, I ended up seeing some of it, and have images in my head that will haunt me forever.

I think they were just bringing up people to speed. The story is about the hellfire that parental groups could potentially bring down on the NFL and the sponsors of the SB.

I read about PT's child-porn bust on the Pitchfork Newswire... in '03. February, maybe? Whatever the case, so far back, the Super Bowl that year featured the Raiders. The Raiders!

Because, various groups against child abuse/exploitation caught wind that The Who were playing the SB. They have asked the NFL to drop them from the halftime entertainment. Also, according to US laws (or as the reporter in the story noted), Townshend shouldn't be allowed to cross into the US. They pointed out that even when he was at the Kennedy Awards ceremony he shouldn't have been allowed.

This story broke about a week ago about the Super Bowl and the groups up in arms over it. Like I said, its starting to catch heat, but apparently not as much as I thought seeing as no one else on the board heard the story.

Yeah, the best way to combat kiddie porn as a private citizen is to do a whole bunch of research by sitting around at home and looking at a crapload of it. Totally understandable.
