I like this list a lot... a lot in common with mine... so why is Animal Collective #1?

I forgot about the Cymbals Eats Guitars.... and do I really need to hear Tortoise?

lol--Drinky's list as usual hits the sweet spot for me the closest. it's just uncanny how close our tastes are in places.

I'd do one of these, but the amount of new music I heard this year is embarrassingly small.

Well, the last time I listened to that Animal Collective album, it totally bowled me over. I know you've always been pretty resistent to the Animal Collective hype, but I've been a pretty big fan of them over most of the past decade. I think this may be the best thing they've ever done.

As for the Tortoise album, that really depends on whether or not you feel like you need to hear another Tortoise album. It's a pretty good one, the best thing they've put out since Standards (not counting that mini box set thing).

Good stuff as always Drink. Great call on Oneida and HEALTH, I completely forgot both of those somehow. Love seeing Jackie-O that high on another list as well.

I think I need to give Califone a shot. I have heard them here and there and always mean to listen further and never get around to it. Is this one a good starting point? Same with Times New Viking. I love everything I've heard, but just haven't spent enough time with either of the records.

I would say that both records are fine starting points for either band.

Really just about anything from either band will work. You may even like Califone's Deceleration albums which are more ambient/instrumental/sound-collage type stuff. Also, if you're not already familiar with them, Red Red Meat, the band that preceded Califone, was pretty great.
