This came up on another board and was wondering what all yr takes would be. "indie rock" is now a genre in and around itself, so what says you?

Mine? Either this: Image or this: Image

Discuss.

I can't really argue against either of them. Not my favorite album by either artist, but to encompass the indie rock ideal as a whole, both albums are pretty much spot-on.

I'd say this or Daydream Nation.

I had to go with an album that personified "indie" for me during my undergrad days.

I intentionally left that open to interpretation, while the other board set parameters. Can an album that was released on a major label define a independent sound? I say yes.

Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted is the right answer.

People who say this don't know what indie music really is.

Independently released albums by bands not signed to corporate 'major' labels? It is a tough concept, admittedly.

I can't argue with Sonic Youth or any of those SST records.

This is tough, tough in what "indie" means and tough on what is essential. As much as I love Beulah, I can't agree that their albums are essential. Off the top of my head, here are ten I would tell a friend I believe to be essential to the very broad "indie" genre (even though the word "indie" really started in the 90s):

Minutemen - Double Nickels On the Dime
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Husker Du - Zen Arcade
Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico
Big Star - #1 Record
Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted
The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
Pixies - Doolittle
The Stooges - Fun House
Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady

I would add this one to the list, and like the Joy Division nomination.

Thus far, I've only heard 2 of the albums mentioned, so y'all must be doing a good job here on the "indie" thang.
