TOKYO -- The United States and Japanese baseball champions could meet in a Global World Series, Japanese daily Nikkan Sports reported Thursday.

Nippon Professional Baseball commissioner Ryozo Kato was quoted as saying his Major League Baseball counterpart, Bud Selig, had agreed the winners of the two countries' professional leagues should play each other.

"I was surprised, Mr. Selig said he wants to realize the plan before his tenure ends," Kato told the Nikkan Sports.

Selig is set to retire in 2012.

When he took office in 2008, Kato -- a former Japanese ambassador to the United States -- said one of his goals was an international series between the world's two biggest baseball nations.

Japan is the two-time defending champion of the World Baseball Classic, a tournament of national teams that includes professional players from leagues around the world that is played during spring training. The next WBC will be played in 2013.

Do their seasons even correspond? I feel like their team would be winning a championship when ours in spring training and vice versa. Scheduling nightmare.

I have no clue, the only complaints I have read is that they use a smaller ball and have a more rigid strike zone.
In general, I'd think the talent level overall on an MLB Championship team is three times that of a Japanese Championship Club, even if they have won the past two WBC titles.

Rigid for pitchers or hitters? I'm not a big baseball watcher anymore, but it seems like the MLB strike zone has shrunk considerably over the years.

Rigid for hitters, i.e higher number of strike outs
The MLB strike zone is virtually non-existent in some games and there is no consistency amongst Umpires.

Japanese season runs the same mensual course as MLB. Late March/Early April thru October.

I think you're confusing MLB/Nippon Pro Baseball with MLS/all other world football (soccer) leagues.

Shouldn't Cuba and Puerto Rico be in on this "World" thing?

Nikkan Sports reported that they "could" meet in a World Series? Sounds plausible.

Bingo. I do think they could make an argument for including a Cuban champion & Mexican Summer League (I think they play two seasons, south of the border) champion, though.
