my grandmother got me two autographs.

she was walking in florida and saw a tall black man and said, "are you a baseball player?" when he said yes, the young rookie to be gladly gave her an autograph for her grandson. It was Bernie Williams.

the other one she got me, similar story was the touring drummer for Boys II Men.
that one cracks me up.

I got Kool Keith's on a couple of his cds

When I was in line waiting to get my stuff signed at Tower, I overheard someone who was with him mention the fact that "there are a lot of white kids in line" ....

Thought that was pretty funny..

I'm curious about the reasons for wanting autographs - and I'm not asking in a condescending way; I'd seriously like to get some insight into the impulse behind it (for another project I'm working on). Is an autograph simply used as proof that a famous person was encountered - or does it serve some greater purpose? Is collecting memorabilia the same thing - and do any Obnerati collect memorabilia?

Anybody care to share some theories?

i guess it's a remains, reminder and proof of a personal contact.
i'm not really sure why someone would collect autographs that they buy, i guess it's the same, but really far removed.

Mine just happen by accident. Stuff I picked up at the record store, or stuff cool people had even cooler people send to me. I wouldn't go out of my way to own someone's name.

I collect lots o' stuff, some "memorabilia", music memorabilia. The only music stuff I have are a Cheap Trick guitar pick scooped off the floor at a show, and a can of Iggy "Pop", given out as a promo with the "Instinct" album. and a metal "Sound & Vision" display stand from the Bowie boxed set.

Now, airline crap, I gots me lots o' that.

I've got about 15 signed items - setlists, posters, etc. I only tend to get things signed if it's an artist that's meant a lot to me over the years. All my stuff has been pro framed & it looks great. I figure when I get older I can look at it all & cherish the memories.

Most recent thing I got signed was a magazine cover by Paul Westerberg.

Most autographs I have are accompanied by letters that go something like this.

Hey, Paul

My wife and I are really excited about this new chapter in our lives and think it's so cool that you're spinning Blackmore's Night songs.

you're the best,

Ritchie Blackmore.

or:

Hey, Pete:

My manager wanted to drop you a line and say thanks for the great interview. Thanks for the support. I've told the record company to include a bunch of stuff and some copies of the new cd. You rock.

-Rick Springfield

or:

Dear Philsaw:

My wife Taylor (Barton) wanted me to send you these. It's really tough to keep an independant career going, but you guys make it work.

-G.E. Smith

I have a Padres pennant from 1983 or so that I got signed when I was a kid by Tony Gwynn, Goose Gossage, and Steve Garvey. I'd like to get it signed by more guys from the '84 team, but none of them are really as "noteworthy".

My friend got Ron Jeremy's autograph when he (Jeremy) was promoting some documentary about himself or porn or something like that at a theater my friend worked at. He wrote "rock out with your cock out."

I have an autographed picture of this guy on my wall:

Also, I have an R. Lee Ermey (the drill seargent in Full Metal Jacket) in my wallet.

I also have a college ID where I had convinced the gal taking the pictures that I required an pirate-style eye patch, which I later got signed by all the members of The Toadies.
