I would say to get the hell out of san jose and go to SF, but it's not a quick trip and the trains stop running pretty early. San Jose is pretty boring town, particularly the part where you'll be staying. However, I can recommend the food in the little Vienamese neighborhood.

foamearplugs lives near there

You can probably catch a Sharks game or go to some awesome malls. They have a bunch of good used cd shops you can hit. I can get the names from foam.

The weather won't be as warm as you are hoping, but it should be 30 degrees better than you are experiencing. Bring a jacket.

I live about 1.5 hours away. Meet me in Tracy?

There's a good record/CD/used CD store in SJ, Streetlight (http://www.streetlightrecords.com/Home).

That's about all I know about SJ, it's just a city I drive thru to get to Santa Cruz. :rockbanana:

I live in Santa Cruz. I am old, work 16 hours a day, a recovering drug addict (don't drink), so you don't want to meet me. I have never met an Obner and that's probably just as well.

But I can tell you where to go and what to do. San Jose is not a tourist definition but it has some interest... Santa Cruz and SF would be more interesting to you. I'll check back in this thread later.

If you've gone from San Jose to SF on a bridge you've gotten lost.

I emailed a bud in SJ and here's what he had to say:

As to dives to frequent in the San Jose area, I’d offer the following:

Music
Rasputin’s. I generally prefer their music selection to Streetlight, and they’re just down the road.
http://www.rasputinmusic.com/locations.html

Beer
Basically across the street from Rasputin’s is Rock Bottom Brewery. I know they’re a chain and all, but whoever is the brewmaster at this particular joint has talent.
http://www.rockbottom.com/DisplayLocati ... onID=10078

Wine
It’s uber-yuppie-ville, but Vintage Wine Merchants in Santana Row is alright. And, while I do not condone mixing red wine and tequila in the belly, they’re barely 30 meters from a joint that makes killer margaritas.
http://www.vintagewinemerchants.com/location.php

As to art and punk rock, not sure where to point him. The music scene in San Jose seems pretty thin, with SF getting most of the action.

Lived in SJ for two years. I'd disagree with the rec for Rasputin other than for the fact that they have a far greater used CD selection than Streetlight. But, Streetlight is the shit and the staff there, at least when I was there, will do what they can to get what you need music-wise.

SJ can be pretty boring. The downtown is DEAD most nights. But, sometimes, that's kinda nice.

I don't remember a lot of the places around. I remember a place I used to play and do open mics called King's Head. Has a decent beer selection but it's nothing spectacular. Just a favorite spot of mine when I was there.

I have a couple of friends in Santa Cruz and it's a great place, but they're all in AA, so I doubt that'd fill your gweeg and booze hopes. Cool people though. I'd suggest getting to SF or SC if you can.

Yeah, our Rasputin's has a great used section, including a fifty-cent section where I've got some incredible bargains (and some incredible shit, too), but it's a cheap way to feed the CD shopping jones.

And I forgot about SC's music scene- if you're really keen on seeing a live band, see who's playing at the Catalyst (Dave Rawlings Machine there Feb, 5th). http://www.catalystclub.com/

Isn't foamearplugs, Timmy's brother?

And ditto on the boringness of San Jose.

PS -- Harry, I may be up Santa Cruz in about a month's time. Meet for tacos and reminisce about Brooklyn Ave? What d'ya say?
