George Washington

Watched this because it was featured so highly in so many best-of-the-decade lists. It was alright. A pretty movie that seemed to come close to really having something to say only to maintain an ambiguous, arty distance. I'm not really sure what I wanted from it, but watching it made me want to re-watch Gummo.

i mentioned this on someones list that had GW on it, but i really liked All The Real Girls so much more. seems like i'm in the minority there.

Still haven't seen All The Real Girls or Pineapple Express, but I think I can stream both of them from Netflix. I'd like to see the former, not sure about the latter.

Give Pinneaple Express a chance, Drinky...I'm not exactly sure how your tastes run in comedy, but I think you might like it.

I really want to see that Stu. Probably have to wait for DVD though.

Finally watched Gran Torino. It was ok. I'll admit, it was better than I expected. That said, it wasn't the end-all-be-all that some of the people 'round here made it out to be.

Got tickets for the premiere of the Drive-By Truckers doc @ the AFI Silver Theater in DC. Pretty excited. Patterson Hood is going to be there along with the director. Feb. is going to be a pretty DBT month for me, with this and then seeing them 2 nights in a row in Charlottesville.

Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson

Ken Burns doc. Very good. The story of Jack Johnson is one that I was relatively unfamiliar with. I can't believe it hasn't been crapped up in a biopic within the last 20 years. Johnson is a very interesting and uncompromising character and would be ripe for someone to think they could get an Oscar.

actually wasn't as horrible as i anticipated, but i had very low expectations. it really annoys me how every single movie is so obvious with setting up sequels these days.

Saw this a couple of days ago and thought that it was quite good. Thought the actors and direction were a good bit better than the story itself though.

The Proposal. Yeah, that Sandra Bullock movie. Gotta keep the Netflix queue somewhat balanced with stuff the wife wants to see, you know. Thankfully, I managed to fall asleep and spare myself from at least the last 30 minutes. FWIW, she didn't end up liking it, either.

Double Indemnity. Made a strong case for using our Netflix queue for catching up on all the classics we've never seen. We both loved this. As predictable as the story may be now, and as over the top as the dialogue is and all (typical noir, I guess), there are still so many great details and little twists. I loved when Keyes started going off about the actuarial tables on suicides, stuff like that. Now I'm going to have to start digging into old noir movies, and frankly that's a little intimidating.

The Hangover. Just not that funny. Galifianakis was OK but frankly a little disappointing. The pedo jokes surrounding his character just weren't that clever or amusing. The movie repeatedly tried for that "OMG that's just so wrong" factor, but it never brought the laughs as much as, say, any first season episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. (And I guess it didn't help that I had just watched all of those recently.) Worth a $1.99 rental, I guess, but it makes me sad that this was considered one of the best comedies of last year.

Watched 'American Cannibal' yesterday..

Not bad...According to the net, there is lots of debate whether how much of a doc it was as compared to it being a mockumentary....without giving away spoilers, i think there would have been more in the news if this was 100% totally real...watchable

funny people. the whole romance plotline was not needed at all. sandler's stupid voices got on my fucking nerves. aziz ansari, rza, jonah hill and norm mcdonald were good though.

Funny People.
I gave the first half of the movie a 5 out of 5.
The second half 1.5 of 5.

Inglourious Basterds

Finally saw this. Really, really liked it. Pretty much the perfect movie for me. I love Tarantino and WWII. Cristoph Waltz's performance was as amazing as everyone said. A lot of my friends have told me they hated the movie and I can understand. It was marketed as if the Basterds were in the movie 95% of the time. They were in only about 1/3 or 1/4 of the movie.

I agree. I really liked the movie. I didn't love it, but it was pretty friggin' good, primarily due to a lot of good Tarantino dialogue.

I also saw "The Hangover" this weekend and really enjoyed that also.

The Cameraman. i've been on a pretty serious buster keaton kick lately. i rolled through this sunday morning and enjoyed it. it's not the best of his, but the date (bus ride, pool scene) and chinatown fight were hilarious. also, marceline day... woo.

I saw it a couple nights ago and hated almost every second of it. Jude Law has to give one of the worst performances I've ever seen an actor give and the story itself was just sorta dumb. Admittedly, I only went out of some morbid curiosity to see Heath Ledger in his final movie.

Really? At least they kept the essence of the show intact. By the time we saw the trailer for GI Joe, they had already pretty much decided to alienate all fanboys. A-Team keeps the characters looking like the characters in the show, and keeps catchphrases, etc. I expected it to be over-the-top, so I guess I'm not surprised by the trailer. All I care about is Hannibal uttering his trademark line, the van, and well, a black guy with a mohawk. You got that, I'm probably gonna give you some rope.

I got a miniature replica of the A-Team van for Christmas in '83 or something. My first molo van.

I'm not sure "some rope" is going to cover their weak-ass substitute for Mr. T.

And I'm still kind of at a loss as to how anyone could have expected more from a G.I. Joe movie. Really. It's a concept that's every bit as ridiculous as the A-Team, and in execution from the early '80s onward, it's been just as silly. Yes, that includes the comic books, too, which I did read for a while as a kid. They were even more dubious for taking themselves so seriously.

And I dunno, this A-Team preview doesn't even look remotely fun to me. How'd you like that Dukes of Hazard movie?
