Certainly not a thread I thought I'd be bumping...

So, one of my brothers was just diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. He's been in the ICU for six days, but his progress has been pretty outstanding and he could possibly be coming home tomorrow after his first dose of chemothreapy.

We're finding that almost everyone knows someone who's had, or has, this and the cure rate, combined with his age and health, is encouraging, but more insight or experience is always welcomed.

He's in pretty good spirits and the nurses all love him. Leave it to the sick one to make everyone else feel better. He's had my mother take a picture of him each day he's been in the hospital and wants to make day one his Facebook profile picture.

Now, THAT is awesome!
In a situation like this one, it's essential to have a good attitude, and it sounds like your brother has a great one; I love that he can joke about his situation, as awful as it may seem to be.
Much love to you and your family, Stace and a very speedy, full recovery to your brother. I do hope that it all shakes out for the best.

First I've seen of this thread. Fuck.

A dear friend of mine (early 30s, regular drinker and smoker) fought for nearly two years after getting diagnosed. She passed on in early May, and it hit me like a 2x4. That said, "Life is made up of greetings and partings. That is the way of it."* We get through these things as best we can.

Stacey, I wish nothing but the best for you, your brother, and your family. As Todd said, the fact he can make light of it speaks wonders. You know how to get in touch if it will help.

Wow, prayers definitely for your brother, your family, and friends. Sounds like he's going into this with strength--which is probably the best thing. Thoroughly believe attitude in situations can be a gamebreaker.

I'll keep him in my prayers, Stacey. I'm terribly sorry you have to go through this. It definitely sounds like he's got the right mindset to lick this.

What everyone else said. I'm sorry your family has to go through this, but it sounds like he's got the attitude and the support network to make it through.

DAMN.

Thanks, you wonderful Obners, you.

It's crazy how quickly one can become accustomed to a place like the ICU.

He'd been hooked up to a tube draining fluid from his chest until today and starts chemo tomorrow. He asked the surgeon if he could keep a piece of the tube that was actually in his chest as a souvenir.

Also, I think my mom has a crush on one of his doctors. She described his look as "like male Farrah Fawcett hair", which was pretty enlightening.

My friend battled Hodgkins. She's alive and well, and I'll be praying your brother can beat it too.

I never knew how lucky I was that everyone I've known that has died, at least those close enough to me to matter, have died fast. One of the girls I see has been watching her dad die of cancer for the last year and it's still going on. Spreading out the suffering just looks like prolonging the misery to me. All these long, drawn out disease things suck.
