One of my best friends has a sister in Haiti, and she hasn't heard from her yet. I spent the afternoon with her and she was a wreck, I can't imagine what that would be like.

How did an EQ of this magnitude not trigger a tsunami? Is it because it's too close to a continental land mass (I think like 180 miles from the U.S.)?

I think because the source of the quake was inland rather than out in the ocean. Tsunamis typically result from water oscillating outward from the source and then forming large waves as it goes over shallower areas and reaches land. Or something like that. Landslides can cause tsunamis, too, but apparently that didn't happen.

Aren't there scientists that can predict these kinds of earthquakes?
