I think because the source of the quake was inland rather than out in the ocean. Tsunamis typically result from water oscillating outward from the source and then forming large waves as it goes over shallower areas and reaches land. Or something like that. Landslides can cause tsunamis, too, but apparently that didn't happen.

That makes sense. Thanks!

Actually, its caused by the direction of the fault shift.. The two plates shifted laterally along side each other which doesn't stir up the ocean as much as two plates crashing into one another, with one sliding underneath.

Aren't there scientists that can predict these kinds of earthquakes?

The Haiti earthquake was predicted with a fair amount of precision (prediction was a 7.2, quake was a 7.0) - but mere predictions don't help the situation. It's not like a specific date can be predicted; it's more along the lines of "well, these plates haven't moved for 200 years, so expect a big one in the near future."

buddy of mine works for the Red Cross and mentioned that they set it up so it would be the easiest way for people to donate, and so far it's been hugely successful. Over 3 million bucks from that alone in just over 2 days.

The viral aspect of it has the potential to get a lot larger portion of the population to donate when they may not normally. Especially the younger generation. Read that almost 800,000 had been donated to the Red Cross alone through this text-based donation by 3pm yesterday.

I think it's legit. If every cell phone user in the country donated thruogh the text process, it would be more than a billion dollars donated.

i was listening to the bbc this morning, and the report from haiti brought tears to my eyes. you could hear the wailing of someone in the ruined hospital. they interviewed a father who lost one daughter. his other daughter's head was split wide open, and the bones were sticking out of her legs. there was no medical treatment available, so he was just holding her broken body. it was too much for me.

Weird, they used to not publish pictures of actual dead people in newspapers.

People open up old crypts, and shove corpses of quake victims into them.

Fucking hell.

Heard the WV Air Nat'l Guard is going to be deployed tomorrow or Sat. Glad some supplies can finally be brought in.

Money+prayer right now from me and my wife. Its amazing what just $10 from me can accomplish when put with everyone else's $10. Just think if we applied this principle to other problems.

That country is a wreck. Buildings fall apart w/o earthquakes there. One of the "lucky" things about the capital is that it didn't have huge buildings. The highest were 3 stories. Could you imagine if they had huge skyscrapers

I think also what really hit me besides the massive casualties/injured/refugees was that they kept getting hit with aftershocks of sizable strength.

Oh, so true. I thought one memorable image in all this was at the end of Obama's speech today, this passage:

Finally, I want to speak directly to the people of Haiti. Few in the world have endured the hardships that you have known. Long before this tragedy, daily life itself was often a bitter struggle. And after suffering so much for so long, to face this new horror must cause some to look up and ask, have we somehow been forsaken?

To the people of Haiti, we say clearly, and with conviction, you will not be forsaken; you will not be forgotten. In this, your hour of greatest need, America stands with you. The world stands with you. We know that you are a strong and resilient people. You have endured a history of slavery and struggle, of natural disaster and recovery. And through it all, your spirit has been unbroken and your faith has been unwavering. So today, you must know that help is arriving — much, much more help is on the way.

Now I am not an Obama true believer and in many ways I have been hugely disappointed with him, but as he said this his eyes locked on the camera and filled with tears and his voice filled with emotion... and it seemed so real, even more than the highly skilled Clintonian "I feel your pain" warmth. A long history of pain and injustice for the Haitian people. He seemed like a President, not a Candidate.

They did a story about this on NPR this morning. I knew there was a reason I didn't like Wyclef Jean other than his terrible rapping.
