Among other things....

Chad will get it... not sure who else. It was OK - I really think that they left out a number of his gems though - in the whole, it really didn't do justice to the force that was Kwame.

I'm about a fifth of the way through this. Man, it would have been so wild to have gone through teen years like Tommy Stinson.

Also, this book has probably the best (or at least most interesting) preface I've ever read.

My Goat Ate It's Own Legs: Alex Burnett

Finished most of this in the waiting room this morning...been going through it for a while. Collection of shorts. Some a bit hit or miss. Mostly quite good though and at the least entertaining. Distractingly chipper and absurd prose with stories much more cynical than the style would imply. Interesting stuff like a story about a girl who dated death, meeting God's ex-wife, Hell as tourist trap and of course the goat from the title. Nothing earth shattering but a really fun one to read.

Good, but I was disappointed with how much of the "mystery" is given away within the first hundred pages.

Journalist Blumenthal documents the movement of conservative evangelicals from the political wings to center stage, delving into the psyches of those who now lead a Republican Party "fixated on abortion, homosexuality and abstinence education; resentful and angry."

Got this for Xmas and I'm trying to overcome my reluctance to read books, much more common in the last decade, that analyse cultural foundations like religion and music (often with generic titling such as X: The Science behind X; etc.) in terms of neuroscience and therefore consider it 'Thereby and Forthwith Entirely Explained....' I am not saying that this book falls into that camp (although it probably will) - only that I had categorized it that way. If it is any good, I will report back.

Update: I read the chapter on the Butthole Surfers last night and it did nothing to change my opinion that they are not only the greatest band ever but quite possibly the greatest creatures ever hatched from bowling balls (or wherever the fuck they came from)

i have cracked it, but i just can't crack it. first couple chapters are remedial for anyone with a basic knowledge of sound, so I'm having trouble finding a start point for myself.

May I suggest page 73?

(As jsh mentioned, Chapters 1 and 2 are basic music theory - but I have a feeling that they miss the mark - either too 'remedial' as jsh says for anyone familiar with basic theory, and yet not explained clearly enough for someone to grasp without previous exposure. However, I found enough interesting anecdotal information to read the chapters through- and a refresher was a good thing for me).

Seriously dude, even the stories that I was familiar with (like the famous "piss wands" episode at Danceteria in NYC) are amazing. Gibby and Paul=biggest ghouls ever.
