leon did not include album art, so i made one for him, which was essentially the first thing i found on the internet

Baader Meinhof- Baader Meinhof
so there's this Brit named Luke Haines, whom I've heretofore been unaware of, but who has a pretty impressive discog spanning most of this decade and most of the last, depending on where you begin/end the Aughts, and who supposedly started Britpop, which means he hates being called the Father of Britpop like any self-respecting artist would. <drunkenly raises Pilsner> The Baader Meinhof project seemed like something i would like, having always held Teutonic terrorist groups close to my heart but i couldn't get past the breathy delivery of the vocals, even though they were over a somewhat interesting minimal pastiche of percussion, strings and fuzzfart bass. Pretty good. But not great.

Babyshambles- Janie Jones
Hard not to imagine an adorable tweaked out, 3-years-to-live-at-best Pete Doherty puking these words and givin' the ol' two finger Britbird during a listen. And of course all sorts of modern day Twiggy lookalikes driving mini-Coopers with the Union Jack painted on the hoods.

The Accidental- Wolves
Can't get more rill dill than recording an album on a laptop with a pair mics in an apartment and then getting picked up by Thrilljockey. reminds me of a Uruguayan filmmaker i once knew.

Adam Green- Drugs
Hammy vocals makes me think of Richard Cheese without the inane covers.

Clipse- Virgina (Team Teamwork Remix)
definitely takes the title of Best Rap Song of This Mix, but i do prefer Flashing Lights mo' better.

Supersuckers- Dead in the Water
indie guys doing an indie version of roots music, likely taking cues from the alpha alt-countryists uncle tupelo like any white guy under 30 playing a variation of western swing would rightfully do. <lonestar> one of those bands that have toured with everybody but the average mall kid would think they’re a brand of giant squirtgun. my research has shown that rick sims from the gaza strippers is/was a member, which wins some points because i saw the GS in chicago about 8 years ago and they kicked my dick in.

The Sonics- The Witch
song is canonical, but for that reason it would have been good to hear some other not-so-seminal track by these proto-scum-garagers. <pilsner>

UGK Ft. Outkast- International Players Anthem
the vocals seem detached from the music in this mix, as if one of the Kingz was recorded rhyming in the shitter. this makes the 3rd song i've heard the "fuck widout a rubbah" line on.

R.L. Burnside- Bad Luck City
what i'm hearing here is a lack of teeth in Mr. Burnside's head, which is to be expected since he's an old juke joint dude and they probably either got busted out or fell out from syphilis. this seems to be a collab of some kind, because there's a bigtime coffeeshop/triphop beat going on and i don't see a 90 yr old blues guy operating a micro-korg with so much aplomb. hard to say "moby-esque" with out chortling, but "moby-esque."

chortle.

Bradley Nowell- Little District
this tune is...dare i say....sublime

My Teenage Stride- Depression Kicks
Thumbs up to this foray into rainy darkpop a la Smiths. bass player sounds like he's had a lesson or two, which means he's probably a dick and one that bitches at the others about being late for practice. <pilsner>

Magnetic Fields- I don't Believe you
stephen merritt comes across to me like an indie rock gay Ben Stein. brainy and dry, and not afraid to sneak in a zinger before you have a chance to realize you've been flayed. i have a hunch he may already be posting on obner. liked, but not loved.

Gucci Mane- Lemonade
dude's in jail

Chixdiggit- Henry Rollins is no Fun
i think the mid-90s glut of Lookout-style punk ruined this style for me. this tune's built solid, but like a nissan cube, i wouldn't drive it in public.

Santogold Ft. Movado- L.E.S. Aritistes (XXXchange Mix)
very tasty vocal melody in the chorus and a hefty contender for the modern diva pantheon that includes gwen stefani and jessica simpson except this one has an indie pedigree and a VO5 sponsorship.

The Deathray Davies- Stumble
Need to pour a little milk and brown sugar on this, if you know what i mean.

Camper Van Beethoven- The Humid Press of Days
closest we’re gonna get to bizarro here, which is ok because when im not worshipping satan, i like to accompany my morning commute with the likes of CVB, who have incorporated strings and Queen-y guitars in a neat little song about astral projection.

Burning Brides- Blood on the Highway
honestly haven't heard much BB, but based on this tune they seem like QOTSA Lite. <milk and brown sugar>

Bob Marley and the Wailers- Climb the Ladder
hanging wall tapestries in college ruined bob marley for me. (could i be a whinier asshole)

The Auteurs- Show Girl
Luke Haines strikes again, showing a knack for writing sugary pop ditties with just enough spotted dick flair and shim-shimmery guitars to give it the Britpop label he hates so very much.

I'm adding fuzzfart bass to my vocabulary immediately

Hey man thanks for the review. I do think that we have fairly different tastes, but that's cool. It's hard making a mix for Obner, most of the stuff I really like I figured was already pretty well known around Obner so I tried to put stuff I thought that people weren't already listening to. I don't hate your mix, but need to give a proper listen before I can review, I'm going to be out of town for a while so I'll try to do it some time Tuesday or Wednesday.
