As someone who also doesn't like the bright sound of brand new strings, I still must ask what the fuck is she doing?

Jaco Pastorius (sp?) used to reportedly down some fried chicken backstage before a gig so he could smear fresh chicken grease on his bass strings right before he came out to play. She probably heard the story, I guess?
