Okay, so not so brand new, but...
"If You're Wondering If I Want You To (I Want You To)"

I'm not the biggest Weezer fan, a couple of songs from the first one are still fun to listen to. Other than that they pretty much define "meh". And (more than) occasionally suck.

But that chorus is fucking epic.

I am not tempted to buy the record (yet). But, damn that new single is so fucking good. One of those songs that I am compelled to sing along to in the car.
:rawk:

don't buy the record. the single and I'm Your Daddy are good (if you like Green album type stuff, which I do), but the album is not good at all. and not just bad compared to old weezer, or with the notion that a bad weezer song is still better than 90% of the other mainstream rock/pop out there. it's just bad. bad bad bad.

The song is really (really, really, really) good. Rest of the album is okay. I wouldn't go as far as bort and call it "bad (bad bad bad)", though. ...enjoyable, but throw-away pop.

Here's something I've always wondered - how did this band ever become something other than the stated above in the first place?

I've always liked them - including some of the stuff that everyone else despises. Someone tell me how it all broke bad. And "Well, the hipster consensus made it so" is not an acceptable answer here.

i think they showed tinges of crapping out around maladroit (green album still has some decent tunes) and then brought suck to a whole new stratosphere with 'beverly hills'. theyve become a parody of themselves and it seems that they know that and just dont filter anything out

Sort of this. It kind of seems like they took any harsh criticism thrown at them and said "if that's what you think we are, we're going to take that and run with it - let's write a song called Pork and Beans, guys!".

I think that they still have the potential for greatness, but that something funny happened in Rivers head. I still feel that there first two are great albums, and that ever thing before Make Believe are good, but everything since has been awful. I kinda liked pork and beans, but everything else is crap. I haven't heard this song yet, but thinking about modern day weezer is slightly painful. I just wish Rivers would get over what ever it is that makes him write stupid songs.

They could put out one real motherfucker of a greatest hits compilation at this point. Other than "Beverly Hills" and "Island in the Sun," their hits are all pretty solid - even "Pork and Beans" and "Troublemaker" are catchy.

there's a hint at how bad they'd become on pinkerton in the form of el scorcho.

the chorus is good, the faster part in the middle is good. verses are awful.

guys, on those first couple albums Weezer were all awesome with throw-away pop songs and silly lyrics about sweaters and Buddy Holly, but then after that they turned to complete crap with throw-away pop songs and silly lyrics about pork and beans and Beverly Hills.

The whole album is peppered with hints of how bad they'd get. "El Scorcho" is actually pretty OK, though.

I think of shit like "Getchoo" and "Pink Triangle" being harbingers of the dark times to come.

i think their old singles were the weakest songs on the albums. buddy holly, el scorcho, and hash pipe definitely would not be on my personal weezer mix.

Agreed.

Agree on Getchoo, but Pink Triangle is a straight song, pretty funny too.
