I think this is the first product from Apple where the use of DRM controls everything. Every single aspect of the product.

How does "DRM control everything"? Can you not transfer things onto it with iTunes, like you would with an iPod?

This is meant to compete with netbooks and e-readers not laptops. Both netbooks and e-readers are very limited machines. Apple didn't really want to enter this market, but they saw a bunch of consumers walking around with these very limited and often crappy machines that cost relatively very little. They basically combined the two and added the capabilities of the ipod-touch (another popular device). They also made the machine not a piece of crap like most e-readers and netbooks.

You can now do everything you were doing on a Kindle, netbook, and ipod touch in one machine that's a vast improvement on all of the aforementioned products.

Maybe it's because I'm still in school, but I see the utility in such a machine.

Thinks about how awesome a cookbook could be on this - You can see the receipe and have video right there on the same page with the chef showing you how to make the dish.

Also, students can have both their lectures, textbooks, music, and movies on one machine.

You're an idiot. The hardward of netbook basically makes it an internet browsing machine. It's very limited. And computer companies said, "hey look people don't mind having all the bells and whistles if it's very portable, light, and cheap."

I think it's pretty cool and could see how it would be helpful for what I need to do without lugging around my (non-Mac) laptop all day. Plus, my cell phone is just a phone, so it's not like I'd be doubling up on features. Also, I carry a bag, so this in addition to my phone and iPod isn't really an issue.

That being said, I wouldn't buy the first version and I am a bit of a Mac fangirl.

Don't let it get you down, big guy, lower your sky-high expectations and don't take it out on us when they're not met.

I'm not that big of a fan actually. I just think it's ridiculous that people are pissed that Apple didn't make a google/microsoft machine, which is basically every one's complaint.

I also think I am more representative of the general consumer. I don't give a flying fuck about "open" systems. I like products that work well for how I live my life. This will do that - I basically read books, watch movies, listen to music, and browse the internet.

I agree that you can do this on your laptop already. However, I think book publishers will start making content with ipad in mind. Like the video is embedded on the page of the book.

And we all know that Dalen's going to buy one of these as soon as he sees a 16 yr. old prepubescent skater girl reading Twilight on an ipad.

this is a mega-fail in my opinion. the device doesn't offer enough to justify another awkward big device. the operating system is too limiting. one app at a time blows hard. and is stupid. i will most def be passing on this thing.

exactly. the idea that they think one app at a time is acceptable is mind boggling, and it also bodes horribly for iphone OS 4.0. i will not be getting another iphone until multitasking is allowed.

I agree with this. I don't give a fuck about most of these things that every one mentions, except the multi tasking. I would love to have one of these, but probably won't get one for a while if ever. Obviously many of you know a great deal about computers, I don't, and neither do most people. I hope that it improves, but I'm not surprised that it's not perfect. I'm not sure if I would ever be able to give up paper books though.
