Dalen, how are you such a big mac fan, but jam the Android up your butt daily to get off?

omg like, no way, Dalen can dig on Mac AND Android????? Impossible!

i work on a mac daddy Power Mac all day, and love it to bits. i own a Macbook for home/business, and i'm a die hard iPod fanatic (i can't live without it). i would own an iPhone, but they're a joke, so i went the Android route.

i do not like limitations, hence my issues with the iPhone and iPad.

It doesn't make much sense - the android's not good enough to put up with compatability issues, imo.

compatibility issues? what does that mean.

It means that between iCal and Google Cal and my blackberry, something gets lost in translation, and if not for my goddamn steel trap of a memory, I would have missed a few meetings lately.

I really wanted to make the change this week, so I would have the iphone on my trip tomorrow - not because I want the internet, but so I could d/l the XM app and listen to O&A.

gotcha. i use both android and iphone extensively, and will admit the iphone functions way better in some ways (ipod, typing). i love android for over the air syncing with gmail, contacts and calendar. love mulitasking. HATE the shitty keyboard on android. at this point, unless multitasking is added to the iphone OS, i will not be getting another one. google for sure needs a better media tool for android. it's sorely lacking.

So, basically, neither works as well as you'd like?

See, I think this is where we part.

My main hesitation is I really like the keyboard on the curve, and I text more than I do almost anything on my phone.

Apple desktops and laptops (iMac, MacBook, etc.) all allow Flash, right? I mean, I've never heard Apple users complain about not being able to view Flash video while surfing the web. So, why is Jobs so hell-bent on keeping it off the iPhone and iPad?

As Kramer said to Dean Jones, "Well, this decision seems capricious and arbitrary!"

It's a different OS. Users have a lot more control with the regular Mac OS (possibly less than Windows and way less than Linux) than they do with the iPhone OS. Macs crash just like PCs when programs are buggy or there are conflicts, etc., and that's generally an accepted factor of using a desktop or laptop. Mobile devices have considerably less options for troubleshooting, though, and therefore their OS has to be much more streamlined, stable and reliable. Apple's solution to this is to closely monitor and limit what applications run on them, especially where the web browser is concerned since its an essential feature. And I think Flash has been worse on mobile devices than it has on desktops and laptops, anyway.

OK, that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification!

but it has the side effect of not allowing anyone to watch flash based content on a mobile device (such as that supplied by hulu). it's fairly ludicrous to not allow a site like hulu to function on this device, browser crash or no. i'd prefer to risk an app crash than not be able to watch hulu, or listen to other music sites that use flash players. also, flash sites within the browser bypass the app store, and thus don't bring revenue to apple. having the app store as gateway provides a revenue stream to apple, so i can't help but think that the 'buggy' argument about flash is a red herring.

Quote:
Adobe's Flash has been an integral part of the web experience for years. It's the platform for nearly every browser-based game, streaming video, and many an animated banner ad, and it takes a fair amount of processing power to run properly. This is all well and good for laptops and desktops - whose processing power is more than enough to run Flash without a hitch - but when it comes to smaller devices running on limited resources, like netbooks and smartphones, that load starts to become a burden.

Quote:
According to Wired, Steve Jobs reportedly called Adobe "lazy" at an Apple employee event, and then went on to explain the company's position: "Apple does not support Flash because it is so buggy. Whenever a Mac crashes more often than not it's because of Flash. No one will be using Flash. The world is moving to HTML5."

There may be a deeper issue between Apple and Adobe, but I really don't think the issue is that Apple wants to be able to make money off of Flash or that they're against it because it is free. The iPhone Youtube app is free as are most basic apps that are generally free as part of the desktop/laptop web browsing experience.

Can you imagine the additional data flow on the cellular networks when they get this thing running? It wouldn't surprise me if AT+T was paying Adobe to not make it work.

So I bought the wife one of these for her birthday, and it's pretty awesome. Streaming netflix and abc tv app are pretty awesome. The NYT has never looked better. I want one for myself now.

Might make a good mother's day gift though?

Only problem is I couldn't just buy me one as well then.

I'll wait for the third generation ipad before i start getting the itch for one... let them work out the kinks and add some of the functions that people are bitching about right now..

i did play with one at best buy the other day though, and it is rather sweet.

Exactly.

I want to mount one in my work truck since I spend all day in there anyway staring at my iphone and GPS.

Out of curiosity (and nothing more), I took a look at these things on Apple Store . Creeping Jesus, at those prices, it better print lifetime tickets to Disney World. And $100 bills. And get out of jail free cards.

How many $100 bills should a $600 device print? 6? 7? Man, that'd be a deal.

I think I'd rather have an awesome tablet than lifetime tickets to Disney World. The iPad still has a little ways to go, though, to really be worth it.
