If it is the most successful first post ever here, I would feel honored.

I use to love the CMJ charts back in the middle eighties. Before "Alternative" was trademarked and it was just college stations playing college bands on college labels. Then CMJ seemed to be a part of it all.

By the time the CMJ New Music Monthly magazine hit the shelves It was still pretty welcome if for no other reason, the CD's were pretty sweet. It did, pretty quickly become which major label could squeeze their pet signings into the pages and onto the comp, but even then Frampton and Tom did seem pretty sincere, and were trying to herd a bunch of indie-lovin' cats around the music world as best they could. I even got to write a handful of reviews in 2001 at Scott's asking.

Then September 11th happened. The Music Festival was that weekend. Their finances were ruined. I never did get a single paycheck ( I never really bothered that much though to be truthful, being a semi-hick from the midwestern sticks it felt really nice to get published nationally).

Yet the magic was gone. The board, always limited, fell out from under us, and we migrated. I still miss the community we build there. It was passionate, and instructive. There were a lot of nice people there. They cared about every little thing. They shared vast amounts of their lives, their passions, their music, their disturbing fantasies, their porn-watching habits....

Did it become a joke? Yes, it did. Do I miss the vital version? Yes, I do. Do any of you give a shit? No, and I'm ready to be made fun of, as has become your way here at the boner ranch. Fucking bring it.

I wrote a Geek Love. I wanted to follow in Bob's footsteps. I think I sent if off to someone at the magazine and received a "I got it" reply, but the end was already nigh and nothing happened from there.

Also, I love how there's so much complaining about never gaining new posters and when one comes along he has to pass some sort of unspoken initiation. You grouchy bastards.

It was a while ago, and some of you knew something about it, but I did not post it here for fear of getting taken to court for some sort of libel or gag order that I don't remember...but fuck em, I've got nothing, come and get me.

I know, not at all. I knew you were talking about the new CMJ poster guy, but I also wanted to add a feel-good shout out to ol' Chait. Two birds, one stone, etc.

It's not that I don't believe you. Hell, I've been blindsided by casual evil a few times, and it always comes as a complete shock that humans can be such profoundly cruel cocksuckers. I'm just saying that CMJ's incompetence isn't worth this level of hostility - save that for the ones who clearly deserve it.

really.

So poingly, is a certain payroll secretary with the initials BL really as daft as she seems in email correspondence?
Thanks to vigilance and a few letters from attorneys, I'm now down to under three digits in their outstanding balance owed me.

Nope, not in the slightest! It's partially an ESL thing and partially a cover for the person who refuses to sign the checks.

Haha, Dave you just reminded me of some of the people I used to talk to every week when I was MD. Craziness. I never had any huge problems with people, though I'd usually screen calls from people who would obsessively push "adds" on me. Anyone remember the name of the guy who worked for Jetset around 2000? I wanna say Justin, but who knows. Wonder where some of these label reps are nowadays.

you see, we were a small 1000 watt station, I had to play the promoter game just to get the decent records, if I didn't play their bullshit charts game we would have been playing nothing but limp bizkit because they stop sending you records unless you chart their stuff.

I would have one call me so mad that I charted the flaming lips at #2 and radiohead at #1

We were 950 Watts. We found the key was just to call all yr people every week. If you did that then they kept sending you things. We were pretty good about that. One other trick was to chart albums even if you didn't get them--in hopes that other labels would send you things seeing that some other label had sent you a record. *whoops* secret's out. But it worked quite a few times. Dave, you also mentioned 2005 as being when you were MD, by then things kinda got stricter for labels and reps. I feel like my tenure as MD was probably one of the last gasps before mp3s and encoded discs, etc.
