On the effects side, there were so definite upgrades (highway scene), and then some now dated scenes (Burly Brawl). The so-called Burly Brawl that happens after Neo meets the Oracle in the 2nd film, and is gang-rushed by hundreds of Agent Smiths didn't age well. Its easy to look at that scene (which very little was done live) and see what upgrades have been made to CGI.

I haven't seen that fight scene in a while, but I remember when I first saw it, I thought it exemplified all that I thought was wrong with CGI.

Primer - omg, this movie made my head hurt, I can't decide if I hated it or if it was awesome.
Jennifer's Body - Diablo Cody dialogue is the worst. This had a few cool moments, but was pretty bad.
Thirst - Visually, Park is amazing...I didn't love it they way I loved Let the Right One In, but it was OK.

Waltz with Bashir. Pretty good. I ended up liking the visuals more than I thought I would, and thematically, I think it made sense to use animation for this. I didn't realize that it was essentially a documentary until after I'd watched it. I guess the best thing I could say about is that it actually succeeded in making me want to look into the '80s Israel/Lebanon conflict and Israel's history in general.

4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days. Man, depressing couple of movies here. Powerful film, but at this point in my life, I could do without watching things that leave me feeling so shitty in the end. I do like that it took such an unflinching look at its subject, and there were some really great scenes in it, like Otilia and her boyfriend sitting at the dinner table, everyone talking over them, after the big *event*.

Lost Horizon. all i knew about this movie before watching it was that it was about a hijacked plane. but that's so little of it. so, this group of westerners is leaving a fictitious chinese city in the midst of revolution. their pilot is killed before the plane leaves the ground and the hijacker takes them deep into the himalayas. they end up in shangri-la. it's paradise. but they can't escape. it's pretty interesting what they're going for here. but the last 10-15 minutes is a bit strange. maria's motivation is totally unclear and the ease at which conway believes her story after all else he's seen and experienced is a bit unbelievable. otherwise, i quite enjoyed it. i didn't even really mind hearing and not seeing the missing scenes.

4M3W2D is one of my favorites of the decade. Yes, its completely a downer but its so well made and as you said powerful. It boggles my mind still that this wasn't a big Oscar contender. Its DVD distro was weird too. Netflix has exclusive rights, then Borders had exclusive rights to sell it.

Waltz With Bashir was one of my most anticipated films to see before it hit DVD. I remember renting the DVD and having huge hopes for it. It completely lived up to whatever hype I built into my head. If you get the chance, watch the making of doc on the disc. I don't think any of it was motion capture/roto'd. Pretty great stuff. I'd love to see more from the production crew.

Confession of a Superhero

Pretty good documentary about the people who hang out in front of Mann's Chinese Theater dressed as superheroes so they can hit up tourists for money. Superman is an obsessed former meth head. Wonder Woman is a slut. Batman is a short-tempered idiot with delusions of grandeur. The only redeeming character was the guy who dressed up like The Hulk.

I watched some of the interview with the director which definitely enhanced my appreciation of it, but I didn't get around to watching the actual making-of. Over the course of the movie, my wife and I were debating whether or not it was rotoscoped. I was saying that I didn't think it was, but there were a few scenes where, if they didn't use rotoscoping, I'm sure they must have used 3D. You could tell that most of the people and backgrounds were truly animated, though, and I was really happy about that (none of that swimmy, motion-sickness-inducing, Waking Life-type stuff).

Oh man. Haven't heard about this but an old roommate of mine took a pic of Superman outside the theater, not with him, just of him, and the guy was livid when he wouldn't pay him any money for doing so.

He said he smelled like ass as well.

If Batman had seen that, I think he would have kicked your friend's ass.

A Face in the Crowd

Quote:
"A Face in the Crowd" charts the rise of a raucous hayseed named Lonesome Rhodes from itinerant Ozark guitar picker to local media rabble-rouser to TV superstar and political king-maker. Marcia Jeffries is the innocent Sarah Lawrence girl who discovers the great man in a back-country jail and is the first to fall under his spell.

Excellent, excellent film, and so apropos given today's political climate and the charlatans we hoist in undeserved esteem (see: Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, etc.).

I know I'm not the first to say it but I was pretty underwhelmed by The Hurt Locker. Even with lowered expectations, I was still a bit surprised at how unremarkable the film was.

i watched this last night. i knew nothing about it beforehand, so the twist about midway through was a nice surprise. (i thought it would turn out to be a dream because of the zoom technique used while mcpherson is asleep.) the ending was a bit predictable at a point, but the movie as a whole was done rather well. i guess my one complaint, though, would be i simply didn't care much for the title character and she didn't live up to the hype. i kept thinking, "what am i missing here? why her?"

I definitely understand where you're coming from. She did nothing to make herself irresistible except being attractive, which really isn't enough.

Elia Kazan and Andy Griffith...can't go wrong. I really enjoyed this when I saw it. Still a poignant satire as it was then.

I love the scene when Dana Andrews is first in Clifton Webb's apartment and Webb gets out of the bath. Andrews glances and clearly sees a small dick, smirks.

Despite the semi-predictable/hokie/drawn out ending, this is one of the best movies ever made. Alec Guinness is a fucking God.

You gotta grasp the British Stiff Upper Lip/sense of pride to really appreciate the whole picture.

I watched Prizzi's Honor for the first time recently. I found it kind of an odd movie. It's a comedy but it really isn't funny. Yet, I still enjoyed it. Nicholson does a silly accent, but at the same time, in scenes like when he is on the phone with K Turner after meeting with the don et al, he's clearly acting with skill. And Angelica Huston winning an Oscar for this seems odd to me as well.

I will. Ol Frank is one of the few people around here who's opinions on movies I respect.

Wuthering Heights. eh, i wasn't so into this. laurence olivier's great, but i kept waiting for something interesting to happen. also, i found it implausible that someone would favor cathy over isabella.

Rebecca. for some reason, this is one of the few hitchcock films that i hadn't seen before. and i'm pretty embarrassed about that because it's excellent. the acting was top-notch and the twists in the last hour were terrific. there are a lot of ties here to suspicion, but i think i actually prefer rebecca now. the story was more realistic and the ending didn't seem so contrived.
