By the time it got huge, CMJ had long given up on the idea of trying to appeal to a mass audience...

For anyone who was a music director in the previous decade...I have two words for you...Interscope Lenny. everyone seems to have a story about this guy.

He started his own promotion company after he left Interscope...I can't remember the name right now. They sent me 2 or 3 albums, all were meh at best.

I think it was called combat rock or something...LAME.

Haha yeah I used to get crazy messages like that too on my office phone, which was why I never gave out my cell number to anyone.

You still talk to any of those music promoters from back in the day?

other than an occasional facebook post...Marie from McGathy (I worked with her husband)...she was always super cool. Christina from Merge, though I haven't hung out with her in a long time was one of my favorite people, and she did a hell of a job for Merge, still does.

Ah Lenny...but he did hook me up numerous times with tickets to Sonic Youth. We had a conversation about how he had to work the 2nd or 3rd Limp Bizkit record, and how it was lame to send it to college stations. The next week he sent me 20 copies as a joke. This was when Interscope was drunk with money.

doing a fanzine was a much easier and hassle free way to get free music back then guys.

Yeah, but in high school when I wrote my short-lived zine, I still had to send copies off to continue to receive free stuff. A year ago, when I was still doing my radio show, I'd just email labels and they'd send me records or mp3s. All I had to do was post playlists.
