People have to do it every day, and they try to do a good job of it because, you know, that's what they're being paid for. That's their job. In De Niro's case, maybe he was doing somebody a favor or something, but if you're going to go about doing someone a favor that way, I'm sure they'd just rather you didn't bother at all.

That Orson Welles clip is great. Seems like pretty much the same thing.

Exactly. The director wasn't disrespecting DeNiro, he was simply *surprise* giving direction. Maybe if DeNiro actually took some direction all his recent characters wouldn't be the same (barring his elder Focker).
