I thought 'Big Fan' was fantastic. Patton Oswalt was pretty much perfect for that role.

I have 'A Serious Man' and 'Pirate Radio' coming soon.

Just watched it last night, and yeah, it was very good. Oswalt was great. I hope this means he's got a real acting career in his future.

I finally watched The Wrestler. Without Mickey Rourke (and the underlying thought that this is his own personal story told though a wrestling prism) this movie would never have gotten one iota of the hype it did.

It wasn't bad at all, it was just cliche ridden and predictable, but fairly well told and crafted. The best scene of the entire movie was when he was walking out to the deli counter, and he hears announcer in his head, and then walks through the plastic striping on the door and it is silent - and the scene that follows is pretty good. Him fooling with the customers, etc.

i watched the Star Trek reboot last night. it was pretty enjoyable. despite it being an outer space adventure, i don't feel like i missed much not seeing it on the big screen.

Man I loved Star Trek on the big screen. LOVED IT. It might've even been my favorite movie last year. Just so satisfying.

But I like it on my laptop screen, so...

A Serious Man is tough to fuck with though. Airtight.

I downloaded a high quality screener of Avatar last night and watched a bit of it this afternoon. Hahahahahahahahaha.

Pretty much spot on with how I feel about this movie, and I am an outspoken Aronfsky homer.

agreed. it was definitely the best movie theater experience for me in 2009. and then afterward, we stopped at the bar in the theater and watched that bulls/celtics multi-OT game. pretty great night overall.

It was pretty well put together, so despite the sorta weak material, it holds up. I just wish the guy who recognized him at the deli counter had pulled a full on "It's still real to me, Damnit!"

Going to fire up Gomorrah once the wife and baby decide to take a nap.

Good to hear. Been waiting on it to re-release here in town but it just came out On Demand this weekend so I think I'll watch it at home and save a couple bucks.

Be curious to see what you think. I rented it last week. Didn't watch it all the way through like I should've. Had to break it up and watch at a couple different times.

Still, probably the coldest and, most likely, accurate depiction of life in organized crime.

ZERO romanticism.

Watched it tonight with femrabbit. We both really enjoyed it. The thing thats amazing to me, is how simplistic the plot, but with such depth in allusions to scripture and late-60s culture. The stride that they've hit with their films is really remarkable. It will be interesting to see how this will ultimately sit within their works. It definitely has a Barton Fink feel to it, in terms of being critically-acclaimed but not mentioned in the same breath as Oh Brother, Fargo, and Lebowski.

Another thing where I didn't even bother to try. Why would you expect something good out of this?

On an a similar note - just watching the previews of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland make me want to cut my eyes out. I'm sure it will win every award known to man, but good God could they be more over the top?

That Alice In Wonderland looks like a serious drug movie.

As for Avatar, I feel pretty much the same way as Dave, but I could see going to see it at an Imax and digging on all the special effects and whatnot as more of an experience akin to going to a planetarium than a cinema.

I think it looks cheesy and over the top, lots of hamming, lots of special effects, little to no point.

And going to an Imax theatre sounds like a smelly affair; a fella would probably end up with some diseased rabble around him. Not the worth the price for that dreck :)

Avatar was one of the few times I watched a movie and thought to myself, "man, movies going forward will never be the same again."

I'm not trying to hide the warts of the film (most of the dialogue was painful) but, jeez, I cannot understand how someone would watch it and not be at least a little amazed. It is a massive technical accomplishment. It singlehandedly validated years of crappy CGI for me.

Also seeing it on a laptop is like watching a rock show recorded on a cell phone camera. Yeah you can see what songs are played and how they played them but you don't get the visceral experience of the kick drum hitting your chest or the reaction of the crowd in your ears.

I remember the day my friends and I went to see Terminator 2. All they talked about was how awesome that liquid dude was. All I talked about was how stupid the plot was.

See a pattern forming here?
