Veruca Salt is one of my favorite all girl bands. American Thighs is a great record.

props to Bort for getting Team Dresch in the discussion. Anything from Chainsaw records is worth a look.

And I'm with Rads on The Donnas; great when they were trying pretty successfully to be the grrrl Ramones. Beyond awful when they moved on to being Motley Crue-AC/DC with menstrual cycles.

was veruca salt ever an all-girl band? nina's brother was the original drummer. and when he left, a guy named stacy joined the band. and then at some point there was another drummer named jimmy. and now the guitar player's a guy.

So I'm listening to some Runaways songs... I guess it had been too long since I'd heard "Cherry Bomb". Yeah, I think they're a good suggestion. (Sorry to doubt you there, Todd.) Still a little more '70s hard rock than I like, but there's no real reason not to include them.

And guys - mostly girl still counts. More girls than guys. (So yeah, X-Ray Spex shouldn't be on my original list, I know.)

anyway, in case you couldn't tell, that mix is super old. some of my current favorites

Full Of Fancy - their album Sweet Baby Jesus made my year end list in '07 and I probably love it more now than I did back then.

Listen to Polly-O String Theory on myspace - http://www.myspace.com/fulloffancy

I was at this show!

The Soviettes - I don't know anything about them but their albums I, II, III (IV is forthcoming) are all great.

when i saw them in '03 or '04, a band called n-factorial opened. soviettes' singer is a math teacher, so she was real into that opener.

Now that you've destroyed my lack of record sales definer, I'm completely lost. Sleater Kinney sounds 100% more hard rock than the Runaways to me.

If the Go-Gos are included, why not the Bangles?

Were The Bangles originally a punk band? Honest question - haven't looked them up yet.

Look, I'm not saying "definitely not" for anything, and I wasn't saying that for The Runaways. You wanna dispute anything I've said, that's great, but don't make it out like I've made this impossibly confusing. OK, so you think Sleater-Kinney sounds more hard rock and The Runaways. Alright. To me, The Runaways, while amateurish, still carry the '70s hard rock sound pretty heavily. Sleater-Kinney is more punk-informed '90s alt-rock, but maybe that's essentially the same thing.

If you want to actually - gasp - turn this into a discussion by disputing other people's claims and asserting your own opinion of what this should be, that's great. That's exactly what I was trying to do. Please don't act like I'm somehow making that too difficult or painful for you.

Relax Drink. I didn't mean to make it seem like it was too difficult or painful - I was really just fecking around with what seems like very arbitrary categorical limitations. No harm intended. I think the B-52s should count because their contributor with a penis is less male than any of the girls in the bands mentioned.

SK sound punk the same way Pearl Jam sound punk.

I would not classify The Bangles as punk, myself. But, to the point above... if the Go-Gos are, then, why not?
But, they are all girls. And that first record is great.

Really? Even their earlier stuff? Granted, I haven't listened to any of that in a really, really long time, so maybe they do.
