What are some bands you just can't see the big appeal of? There are some bands that are idolized that I just don't get at all. People who like these bands should tell me what they see in them, and convince me that i'm a fool. For me -

Wilco - 'Alt-Country' band lionized for their 'experimenting', which to me sounds tacked on. I find them boring and undeserving of all the hype. I know ther are are a lot of fans on the board and this isn't inteneded as a flame to them, just an honest opinion.

Sonic Youth - They have neither good tunes or interesting noise. They may be influential, but give me any of the bands influenced by them over SY anyday. Daydream Nation is a snore-fest, a pretentious piece of self- absorbed wankery to my ears, and Kim Gordon is one of the most annoying singers I've heard. I'll admit they have one song I like though - 'Diamond Sea'.

Now's the part where you call me an idiot....

Oh and bonus points to whoever mentions Arcade Fire first (I don't hate them though).

Shit, I'll call you an idiot....not really, I don't give a fuck what you think really. An opinion is subjective and I respect that. Sonic Youth's Daydream and Wilco's YHF are easily two of my all time faves. Lord knows given your preferences thus stated I must hate some of of your favourites.

I'll play, though. I've never understood Captain Beefheart or Tom Waits.

I have a bushel of bands that fit this bill, including Arcade Fire, but I wouldn't count them based on lack of output alone.

Just to toss out a few, some of which I see the appeal for others, but ain't my bag. Others are just head shakers.:

Beck
Nas
Doors
Capt. Beefheart
Sonic Youth
My Bloody Valentine
Led Zeppelin
The Streets
Yo La Tengo
Steely Dan
The Fall
Anything Dub

That's a start, and who knows, maybe down the road my tastes will experience these artists differently and I may grow to like it then [e.g. see Volta, Mars]. But for now, I don't, and I'm okay with not liking things. I have a hard enough time keeping up with what I do like.

I agree with the Doors, but that could be more because I dislike their fans.

You dislike MBV? Do you dislike the entire shoegaze genre or just MBV? I prefer Slowdive over them but I love MBV. Dreamy swirls of sound best listened to in while laying in bed. Beautiful, hazy textures; ethereal vocals floating in and out of the mix. AMG said the "vocals meld perfectly with the trippy sonics around them, suggesting druggy sex or sexy drugs" and i'm inclined to agree. Just trying to show you why i like them anyway.

I do understand that. For the longest time I had no desire to read any Hunter S Thompson because it seemed like every pseudo-intellectual twerp would toss back some booze and dope and figure they were aping the master. It just got annoying. After a couple of years, I finally broke down and read his stuff. It is pretty good. Just like the Doors. Just don't listen to Waiting for the Sun. It's fucking awful.

Still haven't heard a MBV song that I liked.

Do I dislike all swirly shoegaze? No. But for me a lot of it is annoying. If I want that kind of aural effect I'd most rather listen to ambient or downtempo stuff instead.

That's an odd one. If you said 'post-' I'd have understood completely.

Fucking no. And double no regarding Rid of Me.

But again, one's man's Picasso is another man's Haring.

I think that one's musical tastes are purely subjective and individualistic. At least we can agree to disagree here without resorting to calling each other idiots.

The over-exposure award:
The Beatles (it's not because I don't "get" them or because I think they're untalented - it's because I've heard most of their songs at least 50 times or more over the years, and haven't gone a week of my life without at least hearing their name mentioned one or more times)

It will never cease to amaze me that people don’t get My Bloody Valentine. I don’t expect every Tom, Dick and Harry to get it but indie music fans that don’t is strange. Listening to Loveless was one of the most moving experiences I have ever had. I was frying my brain out and we just got back from being out. All the pains taking time and money were fully realized, as I was able to hear layers and layers and layers and layers and layers of music. I felt Bilinda whispering in my ear that night. Actually astonished that it is regard as it is because not everyone who thinks so were on mushrooms when they heard it. Just one of those moments in life I will never ever forget. It wasn’t bad on ecstasy and wine either. ;)

Don’t do drugs kids, they are bad for you!

I agree with R.E.M. as they just annoy me. Others like Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Metallica, and other hair bands are useless to me as well. I do like some metal like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and the Cult but can do without most of it.

np: Tim Buckley – Sing A Song For You (tribute album)

Bon Jovi is a critically praised band?
