How have we made it this far in a Jameson thread without Phil chiming in to tell Todd to drink Tullamore Dew? And he'd be right. If I sit down at a bar with a thirst for Irish whiskey, and the options (as they often are) are Jameson, Bushmill's, Black Bush, Powers, and Tullamore Dew, I will go with the Tullamore Dew every time. It's got a nice spice that sets it apart from the relatively mild pack. So dollar for dollar, that's where you should go next.

Holy farkin fook. A friend introduced me to 21 year Balvenie Portwood. We had a few. I came back to the hotel and wanted one more from the bar. They actually carried it. It was SIXTY THREE DOLLARS A GLASS!!

i'll drink pretty much anything i'm given for free, but this is the worst thing I've ever drank. I kept it around figuring I'd eventualy get desperate enough to drink it, but that day never came. It smells horrible and tastes worse.

I actually drink a lot of this (although I usually reach for Virginia Lightning if I'm going for corn whiskey). For the price, I enjoy it quite a bit...I know it's not "good liquor" by any means and corn whiskey definitely isn't everyone's thing but I really like that bitter corn finish. It's almost sweet in a way.

Oh, I didn't drink one there. Jayzus. Had a Balvenie 12 year that was "only" 11 bucks.

I made the mistake last year of asking the bartender at a whiskey bar for a recommendation of something to drink neat as a last of the night after already getting a nice buzz on. The recommendation was some 30 year old scotch for $60'ish a glass. I was dumb enough to go ahead and get it after he told me that he'd recommend it over a lot of the bottles they poured for over $100/glass. I don't even like scotch that much but... OHG, IKGS A BARGHGING AT SIGSGEEGK.

That ain't no hill for a climber ;)

But that site led me to The Malt Advocate, and when people get too into anything, they generally ruin all the fun.

Combination of things...

1. working hard, plus busy recording and gigging
2. now that you have search working again, this thread is redundant
3. people are gonna drink whatever they are going to drink... why fight this bunch?

In conclusion, jame-o is good. I love all whiskeys and most scotches, and i really dig irish whiskeys, of which redbreast is very good, but i love love love tullamore dew.

I also have a recent love affair with macallan's 18.

macallan's 12 is a great substitute at a quarter of the price.

The Macallan 18 blew my effing mind recently on a Scotch tasting. So freaking good.

I also had a cask proof Macallan that as pretty phenomenal too, thought it was 30+ bucks for 2 ounces. haha

Agreed. But then I'll probably end up on the Malt Advocate message board as "oldwhiskeylee" in a month.

My gmail exchange with my somellier friend, Josh:
********
Quote:
Me:
Last night I had a craving for some Jameson.
I think it was because of a Frank McCourt pub crawl special that I saw on PBS a little while ago. Because that would be the only thing that would explain it.
So, I got a glass -- neat. (Like drinking coffee, black.) And I sipped on it over the course of the night and enjoyed the hell out of it!

There is a lot of vanilla in the nose but, as it sat in my glass, it opened up to some hints of maple, as well. Just incredibly soothing and enjoyable on a February night.
I fucking loved it!
Where should I go next, sommellier boy?
------------------
J:
Jameson is a nice Irish Whiskey. Sounds like you like the sweet componet. There are so many options, but bourbon could be a good bet for you. There is a ton of it out there and most of it is of high quality. Or if you want to stick with Irish Whiskey, try Bushmill's. I know you don't make it down here much but Delilah's has an amazing spirits selection.
------------
Me:
Actually, I am not a big fan of the whole "sweet" spirits thing (I once got sick on So Co). So, maybe a hint of the sweetness, but not too much. I've had others say Bushmill's as well. I think that I do want to stick with the Irish stuff.
---------------------
J:
Its really the impression of sweetness that you are sensing in Jamesons. Not actual sugar content. SoCo is indeed sweet and sugary....because they add sugars. It is a terrible synthetic product. Completely and totally different from whiskey and bourbon which derive the impression of sweetness not through added sugars but oak ageing, which naturally imparts vanilla, carmel, molasses to the flavor profile. Trust me, bourbon is not 'sweet'. I would suggest you try both Irish whiskey and bourbon.
We should go to Big Star because the booze is cheap, they have a wide selection, and the food is cheap too.

********

Just wanted to add the "expert's" opinion on here. As much for his knowledge of spirits as for his suggestion of places to go in Chi-town (Chicago folk).

I tried Bushmill's the other night.
It's shit.
Jameson is about 100x better.

Your friend's recommendation was shit. I didn't say anything before but recommending Bushmills is like saying, "you like Jack Daniels, try Jim Beam." The only thing they have in common is they're the most widely produced and consumed Irish whiskies.

Yeah, I prefer Jameson to Bushmill's, but their Black Bush is an improvement.

I'm sticking with my Tullamore Dew recommendation.

we've been trying different whiskeys every wednesday night at grad school.

so far 12 year tullamore dew really stuck out as my favorite.
but then i picked up a bottle of this
Image
it's not irish but it's better IMHO

personally i think jameson/bushmills/powers(not the cheapest powers but some mid-grade one) are all about the same... im not certain i could blind taste pick any of them. i dig all of them enough.

makers mark is okay.. i like the spice of it.
